Lake trout rod
« on: Jan 08, 2020, 04:20 PM »
New to Laker fishing this year and I’m looking for a decent laker rod that won’t break the bank. What are your suggestions?! Cheers, and safe fishing

I was looking to the Mack Rod. I’m curious as to the rod lengths. Smallest is 32”, but I’m not sure if that’s taking into consideration the extra long cork handle. Ideally 32” is what I’d want. But if the handle is included in that measurement Id want something around 40”. Any input?

Thanks for the response btw!

Best little laker rod for the money, actually a better rod than ones costing three times as much. Goldilocks action and you won't break it if you tried. Comes as a combo with a crap reel which you throw away or give to your grandkids to tear apart.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

The handle is included in the rod length listed. You'll also want to match the rod power to the size of the fish you expect to catch.

If you want a cheap broom stick of a rod there's always the HT Ice Blue Trout rod.  Cheap with big eyes and will put the hurt on big fish.

All you need, I just recommend replacing the reel it comes with. I do also have a st. Croix mojo in MH, but haven’t caught anything on it yet.

How is the action on the ugly stick dock runner?  I have read reviews that indicate it easily bends into a U which would indicate a slow action.

It's medium powered glass rod.  Moderate action.  It is essentially the tip section of the medium ugly stick.  Being 36" in length it's good bend.

It's not too much different from the Jason Mitchell Mackinaw spinning rod.  I own the predecessor to that a 38" special which is medium power composite rod with moderate action as well.  That was the companion rod to the Mackinaw bait casting rod on it's first year debut.  Worked wonderful for pike and catfishing, yet still soft enough for crappies 10" and up.

Using weights to set my drag, the rod is fully loaded and bent with 2lbs of dead weight on it, which is just right for the 6-8lb line it’s rated for. What consider for the action of the rod is for the size of the lure that will be used on it, then the size of the fish is the second consideration.
