Long Stem Reel vs Short Stem Reel
« on: Dec 16, 2019, 10:15 AM »
Can anyone help me out?

I have been looking at new ice reels, and I see that 13 Fishing has a new Wicked Ice Spinning reel available with a long neck.  What would be the advantage of that vs the short style?

Thanks

Easier to use while wearing gloves.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

To me when retrieving the line with the longer shaft style, it seemed unbalanced...  and typically I hold the rod and and reel neck i the crotch of my thumb and forefinger.... seemed and odd fit.

Long stem gives you more room for your hand, so you can hold it pistol grip style with gloves or big hands without having the bail rotor hit your hand. I tried them out last year and really did not care for them. I am going back to standard reels for this year. The long stem just seemed to make the combo too big if that makes sense, that reel sticking out so far just got in the way. I fish with gloves a lot, but thinner gloves so I personally don't have a need for the  long stem. I only bought it because it was on sale and I needed another reel.

For gloves and big hands...but long stems makes the combo bounce even more, well just slightly more.

Totally agree... seems unbalanced.  I could see the long stem for outside bucket fishing... short stem for shanties.

I like short stem reels for pencil grip.that way i can grip reel and have the top of my hand touching the rod handle.i think long stem reels are for wearing gloves which i never do.i cant fish for anything with gloves on no matter how cold it is.i harden myself up during late fall steelhead.holding and palming a centerpin reel is freakin cold and gets me ready for winter.
