Smitty sled mounting?
« on: Jan 20, 2020, 02:04 PM »
Does anyone have there sled mounted to their smitty sled?

I'm tired of having the tie down cam strops getting in the way, I'm just not sure about drilling holes into my sled...

I do not.  I like the idea of using my sled sometimes without the smitty sled.  I also use the smittysled to slide my flipover into the back of my truck, like a ramp.  Using the bungee cords is not an issue with me.

There have been a lot of people who have done what you are talking about.  They even put chairs in the sled and act as a place to sit down.  To each their own.  Its your sled, do what makes you happy.

Mounting it to the Smitty sled ..seems counter productive and makes it a uni tasker ..I can see the hassle of the cam buckle straps getting in the way ..had it happen several times..but was able to configure the load in my sled so the straps aren't the problem ..try loading the sled as level as you can add your straps then load other gear atop the straps ..like rod bags/cases etc ..and secure them to the cam straps via bungee. carabiner coated wire ties ..  I load my two man flip over ..strap it down and then also bring another small jet sled ..that gets towed behind..get to where I am going .."base camp" my jet sled with the unnecessary gear and hole hop with the flip .

Yep, I wasn't sure about drilling holes in my new sled either. But after thinking about it I decided that straps would be in the way. So I just bolted it to my smitty and am glad I did.

First try - Drilled  two holes in bottom of sled aligning with cross braces. Put a pin in the cross brace and placed sled on pins. Sled would still come off pins on uneven
              ground

Second try - Attached 4 D-rings to uprights and strapped it down. Straps were in the way.

Third try - Drilled a hole in the front edge and a hole in the rear edge and tried cam straps. Cam straps would work loose at some point and sled would come off the smitty.
Ratchet straps replaced the cam straps. Eventually started to deform the sled and kept getting loose.

Fourth try - Bought plastic welder and filled all holes in the sled. Located where I wanted to place one bolt for front riser and one bolt for rear riser and reinforced those
areas with platic welder and drilled hole and bolted to sled. No more issues.

Do you mean a tub sled or a flip over?  If it is a tub sled, why not drill the holes in the top edge of the tub and tie it to the Smitty with short tie downs that don't go over the top of the sled.

Tub sled, I used it today and it worked excellent.

No tie downs to worry about now and it cost about $2.50 to mount it down.

What ever works for you! I thought the whole idea behind the Smitty was to be able to break the sled down for transport. Not understanding what the tie down straps get in the way of. I pull by hand so Don’t have an issue with straps coming loose yet. Really the only reason I built one is because I pull by hand. Going to come in handy this weekend as we have had two days of wet snow.
Keep it safe! JDL
