Sounds like I need to post once to see conditions so thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm a lifelong flyfisher, just trying ice fishing out on a whim due to cabin fever for something to do with my oldest soon to be 5 year old.  We went out up Seeley area last weekend and it was a lot more fun than I expected - maybe I'm hooked?!

It's been a long time since I chucked a lure although I used to chuck Rapalas on the Yellowstone back in the day so don't think I'm opposed but it's been even longer since I've bait fished.

So hoping to learn a few things, but my priority #1 is keeping my kid safe and I am a rookie on the ice so any tips there appreciated. Where we were last weekend seemed to be about 6" thick and there were plenty other people, and we were in the shallows half the time.   Anyways, looking forward to learning a few things!

FlyfishMT welcome to Ice Shanty plenty of information to be found among the pages of this website. I suggest purchasing a Spud(ice chisel) and learning how to use it to check ice conditions .Since your son is still growing a pfd that fits over his winter clothing is a good safety item watch some ice self rescue videos on You Tube. A clinic is a great way to increase your knowledge and possibly make new friendships with others. Reach out to the other members who live in your area/state and see if they would meet with you for a day on the ice.

Thanks again I can tell there's some good folks on here! I did have the little dude in a life jacket, but I think I need to step back and learn a little more or have overly safe conditions before jumping right out there. I'll definitely read up on the whole spud bar thing and self rescue.

It's kind of a necessity with the kids! Can't wait to get them doing some flyfishing too but first things first
