Early Ice Safety Info: BE SAFE!
« on: Nov 20, 2019, 01:57 PM »

For those braving the early Colorado ice this weekend, remember the requirements for your truck or AT-AT.   ;D
Saw it on FB Nebraska Ice Fisherman.

It's a good idea to carry ice picks for self rescue and a loud whistle to get help if you need it.

Spud bar and a cordless drill with a long shank 1-1/2" spade bit works well for checking thickness. Stab with the bar, if it doesn't go through drill a hole. If you make marks on the drill shank an inch apart it's easy to hook the top of the spade on the bottom of the ice, grab the shank where it meets the ice and see how thick it is.

Don't go alone! Fishing is more fun with friends anyway.

No way is 100 inches of ice going to support Godzilla. Maybe 100 feet. Have you seen how big that guy is? He had better be wearing his float suit and have some picks around his

neck. Better yet, he should just stick with levelling Tokyo and leave the ice fishing to us little people.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Wouldn't even need an auger. Just blast a nice 200 ' hole with his radioactive fire belch.

Where not going to do some wood work on the ice no need for 1-1/2" spade bits.
Just drill a hole with the auger attached to drill nut up and use you're hand in the hole to see how thick the ice is lol or use the scoop and measure the ice thickness.

I was more referring to scouting ice thickness in the early season, when the conditions aren't known or you're the first ones on the lake. Drill and a spud bar instead of an auger (still need a spud bar IMHO).

Be safe!

The old "11-mile shuffle"!

People always wonder where all those rocks on the ice come from-

Bowling ball size would suck on a lake you could use sleds
Good thing Colorado doesn’t allow sleds or atvs  on 99% of the lakes
