New Shelter
« on: Dec 02, 2019, 03:33 PM »
Shopping for a new shelter. My uninsulated Cabela s pro ice shelter lasted me a good many years, but now finally the zippers are shot and there is light coming through some seams.
I’m really interested in the Eskimo Fat Fish 949i.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have one and like it.  It's nice and dark inside for sight fishing, blocks the wind very well, is warm even without a heater running, lots of room inside, and the windows are removable so if you want to open them for more ventilation you can or you can replace them if they ever crack (I have mine for about five years and haven't had that happen).  Oh and before I forget Eskimo has the best ice anchors hands down, they go in like a blow torch through butter.  A few things I did with mine is I took the straps off an old life jacket and use them to cinch it together tighter to store it in the bag and that frees up a good bit of room.  The other thing I do is I don't use the ropes they give you to tie it down, I use ratchet straps because they stay put and I don't have to worry about knots sliding loose.  The one thing I will tell you is this is a great shelter if you're going to a spot and staying put but if you're going to be moving around you'd be better off getting a flip over.  I've been eyeing up the Eskimo Wide 1 Inferno since last year.  I checked it out in a store and it looks like a really good shelter with a nice price.

Thanks! I typically don’t use a shelter when I’m planning on running around, but I do fish planted quite a bit for long periods often. I did order one. Looking forward to the extra room and the insulation. My old one has been a trooper but with the way I fish these days an upgrade was due.

I have a 949i as well and Chris is pretty much spot on.  It is a great hut for when the conditions deteriorate, but not the most mobile for run and gun.   Nice and dark with the windows closed. It is very well insulated.  We run a single mr buddy and can get it nice and toasty in there.  Have had 3 in there without much issue, but I feel like any more would be challenging with seating and flashers/etc.  Mine is about 2-3 seasons old and no issues.  It is important to anchor a corner into the wind during windy days, as the sides can fold in on you if you set it up in the wrong position.  No regrets for me.  It was a relatively affordable hut.

Why not go with a flip over sled shelter? Eskimo, and other companies, offer a hub style flip-over.

For my style of fishing once I locate what I’m looking for I generally stay put.
