Trapping bait in Trout Ponds
« on: Nov 20, 2019, 06:55 AM »
So I live right next to a designated trout pond that closed for the season that’s right full of red fins.

Can I put a bait trap in there or is that still considered fishing?

Didn’t see an answer in the digest, just wondering if anyone else has ever run into this and has any insight.

Thanks!

I've trapped shiners in my local unregulated trout pond for a decade.   Even had the stock truck next to me when I was pulling.  I don't know about closed trout ponds?   I would call your NHFG district office.

Yep, no matter what answer you get here I would call NHF&G with that question.

I got a couple bigger nylon crab traps with larger openings, hoping to catch pike bait, I have caught 3 trout in the past week in a tiny stocked pond. The town puts 50-100 trout in every spring, figured they would be dead or caught, this ponds really a damned brook with a spill way, decent water flow all year I guess to keep the trout alive.

Assuming you're from NH?
I'd look up (trapping) bait regs in the rule book or on the inter web.
There are quantity and size limits of bait traps including hole size, to be legal.

That’s a big NO on that plan.  Called up F&G this morning.

No trapping in designated trout ponds or any tributaries of them as well.  Closed to all types of fishing including the trapping of bait.

Just watch the size of the trap. CT only allows 20" long and 15" diameter.
