  • FLAG UP!!!
I have always called them Shiners and always hooked them through the back right under dorsal fin.

How does everyone else do it?
Keep those holes clean and smooth

Depends on what state I am in and what I am fishing for, but if I can what I like to use are Double Ryder hooks in a Quick Strike Rig;

Get a flag, feel the fish, set the hook, land the fish 90% of the time and best of all almost always a lip hook.

I leave it up to the fish but I try many different varieties. Sometimes I hook through the top of the nose, other times I'll stick em through the back and other times through the tail.  Sometimes I only use just the head or just the tail.  All depends on what I'm fishing for and what's working that particular day
Look for the beer flag, that's where i'm at

We don't get shiners too often here in mid Iowa where I am...as far as minnows go, I hook them through the bottom lip and out a nare/nostril when they're on a jig.  On a spoon, I'll probably have them hooked behind the dorsal fin.
