Heavy action spinning rod 30"- 42" long, shimano 2000 reel (or other same size reel) spooled with 12lb test.  Use med to large tube jigs with a strip of sucker meat.

Braid if youre fishing in a heated shanty will help with hooksets. Size 20 reel or bigger and stout rods.

I use a spinning outfit. You need a rod that has some backbone, but still has some flex it it. I use an older Berkley 32” rod in a medium heavy. A good reel in a 2500 series with a good drag is a must. If you get into a big one they are going to take some line. I like a rod with big eyelets as it’s easier to clear the ice out. I use 20lbs fire line and a 40lbs floro leader.
I’ve caught many trout 10-20lbs with this and never had an issue. (Other than some crapty swivels I got one time).
A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work.

I prefer MH power rods around 36 inches long.  I agree with others about 20 size reels.  I also use 10-12 lb braid with a flouro leader.  I just deal it the ice up from the braid, but it helps with hook sets when fishing deep.
