Auger problem?
« on: Jan 28, 2019, 06:32 AM »
I managed to drop my auger (Orange Nils) on the concrete. It fell 3’, but landed directly on the center of the blades (vertically). I cannot see any obvious damage to the blades, and the auger seems to spin normally. But it now requires a lot of pressure to cut, there seems to be more horizontal movement, and a shimmy as the auger gets deeper.

I plan to purchase a new auger, but it seems to be on backorder everywhere.

Is there anything that I can do to improve the performance until I’m able to replace?

Thanks,
Mark

You changed the angle of the blade... good luck getting it to ever cut right again.

Contact Frank Deluca. He is a sponsor here and is Nils authorized and does an excellent job. I think he can reshape the blades as well as sharpen.
Oops! is too late.

Thanks! I was able to find an auger online, and want to see if the current head can be repaired (will be a back-up).

Here's something to consider:

Although there was no visible damage, and it looks like the blades are not at the right angle (based of what is required to cut a hole), would it be the blades that were bent or the base they are attached to?

Blades can be re-sharpened to the right angle but when you replace the blades will those need to be re-shaped as well?

Have to agree. Can almost guarantee you bent the actual auger itself, not the blades. Friend of mine had his Strikemaster lazer auger bent from somebody lifting it up and pounding it in the hole to get it to cut as they were drilling, instead of sharpening the blades. If you look at it closely you might see a variation in the contour in the auger and try to massage it back with a cresent wrench. That's what I had to do with his.
