That didnt take long
« on: Dec 30, 2018, 07:47 PM »
Hit boyd this morning at about 7. Moved off my first spot at about 9 and when I stepped out of my hut i couldn't believe the amount of people that were out there. It all made sense why the bite had slowed up. Left at about 11. Caught a handful of slimers and lost keeper eye at the hole. Heading out to another spot in that area in the am to see if I cant find the eyes.

Gotta love the power of technology... That ice started making some serious noise at about 10 and it was comical hearing people hustling to the shore.

Yea, between fish explorer, ice shanty, coloradofisherman word get's out quick. I try my best when I record to not go on the forums and submit reports, but I can't control some other sites when they decide to share the info.

I try to fish on the week days mostly it's way better. I'm going tomorrow and it should be pretty dead since most people will go to work.  Glad you had some luck, I was out yesterday and even with 100 people out there we had luck, but of course it's all about finding that perfect structure and staying there even when the bite slow, because it'll pick up again.

I hit em everywhere I set up. From 20' to 8' had a hard time keeping the slimers away but I figured I'd have that problem since they just stocked it right before it locked up... at least I didnt drive 2 hours to go catch a bunch of trout lol. I didnt make it out to my spot this morning. I woke up at 4:30 and that wind was not something I wanted to fight with. I'll head out there tomorrow first thing and see what happens.

My app is saying light 5mph winds for tomorrow. My plan for the other spot just fell through since I found out lontree is no longer open to the public... hopefully boys has safe ice somewhere other than the marina...

So what is the difference between your videos and someone's report? At least most of the people that submit reports with pictures block out the backgrounds and don't say what water they were on.

Did you get out there today?  Too cold for the kiddos, so we're going another time.  I might go this evening.

Yeah I didnt want to deal with the people so i didnt fish anywhere near the marina. Found a good solid 3" of ice and I fished a nice drop off. One other group was out there and they were doing a lot of moving around. Said they only marked 1 and drilled probably 30 holes. I managed 2 slime rockets and the world's smallest walleye. Showed up at 7 and left about 12. Caught all three fish is 17 fow.

Hey, at least you didn't catch a skunk, right?  ;) Don't feel bad, that eye isn't much smaller than the only one I caught last Friday.

Yeah I was happy with what I caught.the second trout was about 16" and his fillets and cheeks are in the freezer now. I found that drop off and within 10 minutes that walleye showed up. Little peckerhead had me thinking I was onto something lol

Fished today by the dam and caught 8 nice size gills and 4 stockers.  Weather was very nice and quite a bit of people out on the ice, most were by the docks.

Nice! I drove by on my way home from work and thought about stopping by. They must do pretty decent next to the docks, I always see a handful of people right up against them. I do pretty good getting the eyes from the bank over there at the right time of year. I just feel like that area gets hit way to hard, especially through the ice .

The amount of people is not due to any one persons report IMO, but rather it is due to a lack of choices. The warmer weather trends have pushed people off the Front Range lakes in the last few years. When we get safe ice it is well known that Boyd marina is one of the first places in Northern CO. I don't like Boyd all that much, and even I was tempted to get out there cause I need to catch a damn fish soon or my head might explode... lol.

I grew up pretty close to Douglas Reservoir north of Fort Collins, and I remember my mom used to drop me off there to ice fish while she would run her errands. The ice was consistently safe by this time of year for many years (and I am not talking Slayerfish thickafugginuff, I am talking at least 5 inches). Im 30 now so that was 15 years or so ago, but still I miss those days.

Yea, warming is a real thing as much as some may believe it isn't. I think we can kiss those days good bye where January use to be a time where metro lakes stay frozen.  I am still skeptical.

"When we get safe ice it is well known that Boyd marina is one of the first places in Northern CO."  Exactly!

Hard Water Warriors facebook page.

I don't have facebook and never will. I believe that page gives away a lot, only reason I went to boyd is because someone told me they learned from there ice was safe. It's Boyd! Everyone knows of it and that marina freezes first. :D
