i recently heard of some bad advise given 2 a guy who is fairly new to fishn this area .he went to a localshop, and this guy told him to use 4lb line for rainbow/stlhead.in canadaway crk.knowing this guy is new to fighting these fish, shouldent he have sugstd 6 or 8lb.aparently so.with his 4lb test he went to the creek and broke one fish off ,so on,so on,he was able to land a17incher,which he had to playout.but broke off all the other bigones.the guys fishing told him they use heaver line, and still land alota fish.sure it can be done w/ 4lb line.but to recomend 4lb for someone new to.?it was bad advise .obviously.some years ago i had a friend from w.a meet me to spin off crkmouth.his first fish on,broke off.he then told me were he went for new line, and the guy there recomnded 4lb for spin castn for salmon and trout.i knew way back then this guy dont have a clue how to fish.i then went on to explain to him every one i know who really knows how to fish thinks this guys a JOKE.he knows everything aboat fishn, but dont fish.??no one likes a know it all, especialy if they dont know sh-t!!everyone i know who fishs alot refuses to go back.we all buy alota gear$$$$$$but not from him.i quess we all feel we can live without the sarcsm, rude insults.and bad advise from someone w/a know it all attitude.i have activly fished the localstreams and habors for over 30years.and ive never seen this so called pro?b-ll ,with a fishing pole in his hands.i think this says it all.how can he know everything aboat somthing if he doesnt acually do it!?? ithink this guy should learn how to treat people.ialso think he should acually pick up a pole and learn how to fish.both might help his buisness.im sorry to seem so blunt but iv had so many others tell me how badly they were treated, one guy walked in and asked b-ll a ?.b-ll laughed in his face.and said you dont even know ther called t---tone.this fisherman.said to him are you trien to get buisness or lose it.feeling insulted, he said that, and walked out.vowing with many others never to go back.this guy is a nice person and didnt disirve to b treated this way.sorry to go on and on.but how many trips has he ruined, and will he  ruin, with his bad advice... ..  feedup!   i think id recomend calling a psychic for fishing information,b4 id recomend calling b-ll.

Seems a shame to leave a bad taste in the kids mouth with the bad dope he was given. I hope you set him straight and sent him on his merry way. Get that kid out there and get a fish on and he will be happy again. I dont knowe why someone would tell him that that light of line was good for those big bast@#ds. I wouldn't use line that light and I've been fishing for them for a long time. Maybe he was afraid he would catch a fish. Maybe it is like the guy who never trains his suboordinates because he is afraid the suboordinate will take his job. I feel bad for the kid, but he needs to get back out there with the correct info.

A little off topic but here I go: The centerpin (not all of them) fishermen in the Genesee River use light line.  This is not good for steelhead.  I think it makes their survival rate drop.  These fish fight to the death and get stressed.  These centerpin fishermen that do this should have some respect for the fish.  They are all about the number of hook ups.  I talked with one last fall and he was bragging that he hooked up with 20+ steelhead that day.  I asked him how many he landed and he said 2.  Why even bother fishing if you can not land a fish.

I usually use 8 lb. leader, but will go down as low as 6 lb. test when the water is running really low and clear and basically sight fish the pools for fish with a stealthy live bait presentation.  If you plan on releasing the fish, definately 8 lb. test is a better solution.  I know some guys like Gmabell says that use 4 lb. leaders, but like he said if you manage to hook into the fish your chances of landing them isn't as good.  Once the water warms up too it becomes even more important to play fish quickly if you plan on releasing them.

If you had ever visited this shop you would know it. Nice to meet you yesterday bb Anytime I mention the "service" I received at this bait shop people will agree that they have had similar experiences with him. The first time I went in and he sold me on the 4# test and split shots so small I couldnt even see them I thought he was on to something when I proceeded to break off almost any hit I got I knew I should risk missing a few hits due to the fish being leader shy rather than losing them by way of breakoff. My next experience there was the last. I went in looking for a transducer for my older eagle flasher and he tried selling me a vex which I understand is his business and I dont need to be sold however I just didnt have the $400 So I told him I was just hoping for a transducer and he said something along the lines of  If you were a serious ice fisherman you need a vexilar...Dont get me wrong I know the benefits of having a vex I just couldnt afford one at that time and my flasher worked just fine. As soon as I told him I was all set and couldnt afford one that day he pretty much pushed me out of the store. I am happy he did because I did plan on buying gear and I would rather drive the half-hour to Happy-Hooker and deal with some top-notch people than give him any business. I believe he is the owner BTW

  Lonnie's a top notch dude!(Happy Hooker)

Remind me to make sure I have all the bait I need before I venture towards Dunkirk. Nothing worse than getting lousy advice from a bait shop owner >:(

Some guys do fish 4lb for me its too light, yes drift/centerpin guys like it light and I draw the line at 6 lb and boy do i hate losing my own flies, some one elses not a bad.

Fish the steelies on the 6 lb use a longer rod and keep the DRIFTING  do not change the drift it will turn fish off, if this happens change size and colors and wait a little ya can still get em just takes some finess.

Also who kneels to fish, anyone?, works great on the steelies in the creeks try you will increase your hooks ups and amount of fish taken from a pool!

It's funny how a lot of bait shop owners are salty old cusses. I enjoy talking with them, but giving out bad advice? Not good for business!

Sorry something like that happened to that kid.  Gambell and IceGeek are very correct that the longer you play a trout, the higher the mortality rate.  Keep the 4lb test for the inland streams.  6-8lb test is better for steelhead, especially in Lake Erie Tribs.  Its not the Lower Niagara for crying out loud.  This includes fly leaders and tippet.

I know several anglers who swear by 4lb test for steelhead.  Of course, they also use 12' noodle rods.  Gambell is right again, when these guys are constantly hooking into fish, but always losing them, what's the point?

And I know whom you speak of.  Better with walleye tackle than stream tackle for trout, seems that's for certain.  Sorry to hear about the bad experience.  If ever you need some fantastic insight into trout fishing, I would recommend to you speak with a guy named Chuck Godfrey.  He's a member of WNY Trout Unlimited - Committee Chairman for Stream Projects, and is the current Erie County Federation President.

if you guy's get great lakes angler -- looks at this months Hot bites section -- the bait shop clerk you are refering to is stated as " putting in as much time on these streams as his store duties will allow". It states "he has a handle on the water level, fish movement, and the latest hot items that will bring the bites". Lol -- let me guess all the stuff he sells is hot. Either way I think he ties a good worm hareness for the marble eyes and has a great selection of LUHRS JENSION products but stream fishing - enough said

Lets get the boats out for the night bite

Some things alot of people don't think about is that these guys have to make a living.  I'm a salesman, have been for several years, and work on commission.  If you guys got paid depending on what you sell, would you try everything you could to make the sale?  I know sometimes we come off as pushy, but it's our job.  Take it easy on us.

I understand he needs to sell products to make money and noone needs to give me any type of sales pitch regarding the vexilar units If I had the money I would have one by now. The problem I had was the tone he was using I felt he was belittling (sp?) me because I couldnt afford it and after I turned him down a few times on that sale before I had the chance to make any purchases I felt very unwelcome at his store. I personally have no problem with salesman...err until the Kirby salesman came by for 4 hours the other night...but thats another story for another day. He owns a smaller shop with no competition around and I hear he is fairly well stocked. I like to support the smaller baitshops but this guy needs some work on his people skills.

True.  There is a fine line between selling and pushing, and some people do need to learn the line.  Actually that's what separates the average salesman from the excellent.  I was selling cars but now I'm selling boats, and it's a very different ballgame.  Anyways, I've met about every kind of person out there, and I'm sure there's a few guys on here that hate salesmen.  All I'm saying is give us a break.  Sorry, had some rough customers today and I read this post and had to let off some steam.  Oh yeah, and if any of you guys want a new boat, pm me!   ;) ;D
