is that not a windlass

Nope..it's a style similar to a heritage laker or along that line...the windlass tip ups are called windlass tipups.....

they look ok except for the narrow reel...I think I'd stick with a wider reel, I know my Lakers are the big wide reels and I'd used those smaller reels before getting these....I like them better.

I had some friends a few years ago that had those cheapie narrow reels and didn't like them.....Esox

I have 8 Frontier and only use them twice, but are very happy with them so far on Pike, only problem is the 1500 feet spool, had to use a filler line then, put on a 100 yards of line....Wish the had a smaller spool, thanks for the reply :D

The lakers I use have a 500 foot spool, I use braided masons line for a backer and then fill the reel with the braided line I use for the pike,,usually 36 pound test but I like the 54 pound stuff for the abrasion resistance...Esox

I have 8 of the Frontier's they were my first tip-ups I got a good deal on them.  Mine have the 1500' spool.  They're heavy duty and tall with the flag up so they're great in the deep snow.  They work good you just have to turn the coil spring in the trip direction to increase/decrease the trip sensitivity.  Also lube the spool spindle with some low temp grease or it'll freeze.
