Mr. Buddy Portable Heater
« on: Jan 26, 2019, 10:14 AM »
I was thinking about getting this Mr. Buddy Portable heater (https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-F232000-Indoor-Safe-Portable/dp/B002G51BZU) for my 8x8 pop-up shelter.  A few questions.  How long does it take to cool down?  Any tricks to keep it covered/protected when not in use out on the ice?

I take my hut out, but usually don't put it up unless the kids get cold.  So it might just be sitting out in my sled for a good deal of the time, and I suppose I should keep the weather off of it.

It cools down pretty quickly.  You can pack it up in a few short minutes.

We use a Cabela's carry bag, but I don't think they make those any more.  However, Mr. Heater makes a carry bag.  We use the Mr. Heater bag on our big buddy and it works fine.

My nephew has the carry bag, works great. Turn the heater off and by the time you have your gear ready to take off the ice it is cold.
Keep it safe! JDL

Scheeles makes a great bag for the buddy or big buddy.  It will hold the bottles, filter hoses ect and keeps the heater safe in a padded bag.

Have the bag and it's nice, bought a few years back so not sure of the cost now.  Heater cools quickly and fits nicely along with hose, tanks and whatever else you might have .

I just got a big Remington sportsmans trunk too keep my stuff protected in my sled and cut down on time loading in/out of the car. It is big (87 quarts I think) but it was the only one I could find tall enough to fit my buddy heater. They were on sale at Fleet Farm a couple weeks ago.

I have the heater buddy cover ,it’s important to use a cover of some sort to keep dust and debris off the ceramic element.I think people don’t and it’s why I see so many refurbed units in the hardware stores. They cool down within 5-10 min.I’ve had mine for approximately five years now and still going strong.

So I really like the look of the Scheel's bag.  I went to their web site, and they say that there are two styles, the "Standard Buddy" and the "Big Buddy", but it doesn't tell/'show what the differences are.  They are even the same price.  I tried calling but got their answer machine.  Hopefully, they will call back.

Does anyone know what the difference in styles is?

Although I don't use a bag myself, the Scheels bag is hands-down the best one I have seen.

cool down pretty fast, first thing I do is shut down heater when I am getting ready to leave.

Place out on the ice and with the wind it will be ready pretty quick

You can also cook a pretty good meal, check out the threads on this site. Your kids will enjoy the food you cook on it.

No bag for me, I haul it in my flip over or in my little sled.

I have the portable buddy, I just bought another one at Wally World for a back-up for this cold weather

I have the Mr Heater bag from Menard's, it's pretty thin, not much to it, but it works.

On the ice, it cools down pretty quick, 5 minutes at the most.

I and 2 other people I know are using the portal buddy in our Eskimo Fatfish 949s, which are about 8x8 popups, so far down to about 0, and it keeps up fine. Out last weekend in my one man flipover, I was turning it on and off even at -10.

Portable Buddy heats up my big Otter XTH Resort very well.  Thought about upgrading to the Big Buddy, but after it warmed us up just fine in -26 temps this past weekend, I'm going to stick with the regular Portable Buddy.
