What rod setup for Winnipeg Greenbacks?
« on: Oct 25, 2018, 08:28 AM »
I just booked a trip up to Winnipeg next March to chase after those legendary hogs and next on the list was figuring out how to outfit for the trip.

I typically use my JM Meatsticks and TUCR Bullwhip for the eyes I catch around my typical stomping grounds, but I have a feeling I need to go a bit bigger for this trip.  What would you go with for a rod and how heavy of line and what type?

I will be buying two setups so I have don't end up in a bad spot on a trip like this if I break one.

Meat stick is a good choice. You need a mh rod with a fast tip for ripping cranks, and for setting the hook. You need to set hard on our greenies. Soft rods absorb too much energy. Plus there’s big pike and bots as well you may hook up with. Any questions, feel free to ask. I’m in winnipeg.

So the meatstick is heavy enough for big greenbacks?  I was thinking I needed something heavier.

I agree, the fast tip is crucial for me and plenty of backbone too.

I was thinking about the TUCR Power Precision or Commander, but wasn't keen on spending that kind of dough just for this trip.

A buddy has a commander, it’s a nice rod. No, you don’t need to spend that kind of money. The Jason Mitchell mackinaw is an excellent off the shelf rod for the lake. Some of the best rods are the quantum rods. Only for sale in Canada. They make a 36” med/hvy that’s fantastic.

On my last Winnipeg trip, I had great success with the 36" MH Ice Slammer rod: https://sportsmensdirect.com/shop/ice-rods-combos/hwi-ice-slammer-rod/

It's a great value rod at only $12.99 (no need to drop $70-100+ on a custom rod for a trip). I was able to fish both inside & outside using large spoons and rattlebaits and it had not problem pulling up several fish in the 24-28" range over 3 days.

The ice slammers are a great rod at an awesome price point. And if you break it, no big deal.

The lake has changed too with the zebras. Water clarity is getting better, so be prepared with a multi prong approach.

Do you have a link of that Quantum you referenced?  I know I can't buy it in stores here but I can probably order one from up there.

If you do get a nice custom rod for the trip I bet you will end up using it more than you think for more than just this trip.  It would also make a good pike rod for your trips to SoDak and some of those other destinations.

Fenwick Elite tech in 28" MH or 36" MH meets all your standards.  Fast action, lots of power and at a decent price point.  They are easily all around my favorite rods

Don't overthink it, I chase big walleye and most M or MH rod works with a good tip. 10lb Crystal braid on a 2500 reel. All about drag, makes sure it's set proper.
1/40z Northland Macho Minnow w/ half minnow caught all my walleye last season. Make them chase it and hold on!

42" fenwick elite medium for spoons and such. Medium heavy for rippin raps. Great back bone and feel. The longer length keeps the line tight for the big head shakes and barbless hooks

The TUCR Commander is a great rod. While it is a M power rod, it is very sensitive and you can fish smaller baits (1/8oz or 1/12oz) and pick up hits from smaller fish (like perch). If you would only be using a heavier rod for this trip, then its hard to justify the cost
