Portable battery use with a Lowrwnce 102C.
« on: Mar 04, 2006, 09:17 AM »
I finally got out on the ice yesterday to try my new 102C.
I have it hooked up portable using a 12volt,8amp/hr Cabelas solid state battery which was fully charged and which I have used several years with my Hummingbird flasher.
It was about 20 degrees on the lake but the wind was brutal and the chill factor probably had it lower than that.
I ran the unit for about 3 hours and then it started to shut down and would repeatedly shut down each time that I turned it back on.
When I got home and checked the battery it was at zero.
 assuming a good battery.
Would you think that the cold had anything to do with the battery life or is this unit a power hog?
 Thanks for the input.

It could be either of two things or both.
First Lowrance doesn't list power consumption for that unit. If it were drawing 500ma the battery (8amp) should be good for 16 hrs and if it is drawing 1.75 amps it should be good for a little over 4 hrs ... theoretically.
Second you stated you have had and used the battery for several years. With proper maintenance you should get roughly 4-5 years out of the battery.

It could be the unit drawing to much power from the battery. It could be the battery is on its last leg. Or it could be a combination of both.  ???

I would try contacting Lowrance Monday AM and find out the power draw for that unit. My guess would be high because it is color, has a backlit screen and backlit keys.

Also Lowrance lists the LCD on that unit to -4 degrees. Prolonged exposure to that or colder temps will damage the LCD.  ;)

Good luck !

I HAVE THE 102C WITH ICE DUCER AND THE SAME BATTERYS BUT HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO TRY THE UNIT ON ICE YET. I HOPE TO NEXT WEEK AND WILL REPORT HOW MY BATTERY HOLDS UP. I HAVE USED THE SAME BATTERYS ON THE ICE WITH 350A AND X 125 WITH NO PROBLEMS BUT IN A TENT.IM SURE HOPING THAT ITS JUST A BAD BATTERY. IF IT WONT LAST ALL DAY I WILL RETURN AND GO BACK TO MONO. I WENT TO THE COLOR BECAUSE IT IS EASY TO SEE IN THE TENT COMPARED TO THE BLACK AND WHITE. IM NOT CARRING AXTRA BATTERYS. I GOT ENOUGH WEIGHT NOW.

What size is your battery??? I use an old hummingbird from my big boat and rig the transducer to an angled piece of metal. I had a larger and heavier battery than the one I have now. My in-laws have a wheelchair shop and gave me a brand new small scooter battery. They are made for constant drawn out power and not cranking amps. It weughs only 2lbs. Haven't recharged it yet this years. Been on 7 trips so far. I don't use it all day long like you guys but it works great and wieghs little.

Here is what I found out this morning from Lowrance....
The more bells and whistles the higher the battery drain especially if using the high backlight setting and high sensitivity.

According to the tech I would get about 6 hours of use on my battery before needing to recharge. This is no good for ice fishing or all day use as a portable on the boat.

Hope that this helps any prospective buyers...

HEY WINCHESTER! DO YOU THINK THE LOWRANCE 125 WOULD LAST LONGER THAN THE COLOR 102C. THEY ARE BOTH 2400 PEAK TO PEAK. THE 135 IS 4000. THE 67 AND 68 SEEMS TO WORK FOR GGUYS BUT THE SCREEN IS SURE SMALL FOR MY FALLING EYES. I WILL BE TESTING THE 102C TOMORROW ON ICE.

That's what I thought. At least you got to the bottom of the problem.  ;)

Trouter...
2400watts peak to peak on either unit is still 2400 watts.
What I'm going to do is look for a 12v battery with a higher amp hour rating and I might end up putting 2 of the 8amp hour ones in parallel which will still be at 12 volts but the amp would be higher.
I am interested in seeing what happens with you tomorrow and that might have some bearing on what I do.
I agree that the smaller screen units are too hard to see and that is why I went to the 102c.
I went fishing this afternoon and was disappointed that I wasn't able to take the 102 to see how it worked so I'm going to get it ready for the boat as we are only going to have 1 or 2 days of ice left as the weather is going to get warmer.
Looking forward to hearing how your unit performs...Winchester 88

HEY WINCHESTER!  I FINALLY GOT THE 102 OUT ON THE ICE TODAY. I TOOK 2 OF THE CABALES BATTERYS AND I NEEDED THEM BOTH. THE FIRST ONE DIED AFTER 4 HOURS AND THE SECOND DIED AFTER 5 HOURS. WHAT A DELIMA. EITHER TAKE 2 BATTERIES OR GO TO A UNIT WITH LOWER POWER.LOWRANCE CAME OUT WITH THE X-96 WHICH IS ONLY 1500 WATTS AND ONLY SELLS FOR 200 BUCKS 320 RESOLUTION.GOT SOME THINKING TO DO. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR NEW SETUP.

trouter it has nothing to do with the power output .... it's the power draw. A unit can have 2500 peak to peak and draw 1/2 amp. Another unit can be putting out 1,000 peak to peak and draw 1.5 amps.

I would check the power draw or consumption before making a purchase.  ;)

 Lone Wolf..
I have talked again with Lowrance and would like to further discuss this with the guys that have posted about the topic. I don't want to take up a lot of space on the forum so is it o.k. to post here or is there another way to do it?
Lowrance seems to be rather patronizing about the subject but I think that most guys want a solution not an I feel your pain pat in the back.
 Thanks ...Winchester 88
