kokane salmon
« on: Mar 12, 2006, 12:53 AM »
Anyone know where you can catch kokane salmon  in NY. I never have caught one or seen one but thats the main reason I want to catch one. I live in herkimer and want to know where the closest place is to go after them. If anyone knows how to fish for them I'd lilke that also.

bug lake is probably your best bet. no ice fishing bug though, it opens in April i believe. check other old stocking lists for other places. reds don't grow very big they are normally 9-10 inches long. great eating. on good days they are easy to catch. or at least get on. use a very flexible rod, their mouths are soft. fish like you would for brookies. if what your doing isn't working try something different. tend towards smaller baits, thier stomachs are tiny. their origional feed was plancton. flies can work well. if you get 1, work the area they tend to travel in schools.

as a side note, please check the regs. about baitfish use before fishing. some of the greatest trout ponds in the area have been ruined by the introduction of baitfish.

good luck and tight lines.

i have fished kokane for a number of years we don't have them here any more use a bit of whole  corn mixed with out meal made into a mush [ make sure it is legal where you fish]  toss small amounts out till uyou draw a school then use a #6 hook baited lightly with a garden worm jig straight down with pole laying over edge of boat the bites ar3e very light watch closley and when you see even the slightest movement of the end of the pole yank when you hook one reel in fast bring into boat no net  they can also be caught trolling i use a lake clear wabbler and a snelled #6 hook for best results use a rubber band for a shock leader as they have very tender mouths. i realy like fishing them for more info p.m. me old ken

The state discontinued the entire kokanee program a couple years ago and to my knowledge they no longer stock them.  There may be a few populations that have established themselves where they were previously stocked but I wouldn't count on it.  I fished one of the formerly stocked ponds several times last year and didn't get any.

The stocking program in Glass Lake is still going on.  I beleive they are being raised at the SUNY Cobleskill hatchery.
