Spoon Auger
« on: Feb 16, 2006, 06:48 PM »
Does anyone still go out anytime with an old spoon type auger? I know they belong in a museum and all that, I do have a modern auger and a motor auger but sometimes I enjoy going out with the old spoon. You can carry it in your backpack and not even know its there. If you plan on fishing in about the same spot or couple of spots, whats the diff that it takes an extra five minutes per hole anyway? If I am going to be out on the ice all day then 5 minutes on a hole is not much for me to think about.

The spoon does not ice up and I have even used it to scoop the hole.

The art to using a spoon is that you can not drill straight down. At least not when you get close to breaking through. Thats when you work at angles right before breaking through in order to avoid having a snow cone shaped hole. hard to fix once filled with water.

Sharpening, I take my time. Follow the same pattern , only one side. Have even did it with sandpaper with a block of wood then finishing with finer paper.

I know they do not compare as far as speed with modern augers. But I do have some good fishing days with my spoon auger and you do not even know its there till you take it off you pack.

Does anyone ever take out the old spoon???

Good post Swede......I wish I knew where I threw my old spoon....  remember cursing the darn thing when cutting holes...it wiggled and waggled all over the place and still recall wondering how in the heck that thing would cut a hole in the ice....and alot of the uptodate anglers had them......the ones that couldnt afford them were cutting holes with the old reliable axe and spud.....yes...very slow....but very efficient with less effort than a conventional hand auger (without the offset handles).....if you get a chance, post a pic with old reliable on the ice......Grump

Swede, I also use a spoon auger. I have two 6inch that I use during early ice when it is not as thick. I think it makes alot less noise in shallow water. By the way, they are both extremely sharp and cut through ice just as fast as a mora. I have tested it with my brother. Once the ice gets 8 inches or more, I go to the lazer. Just my 2 cents. There is a modify button above your post lad so you can take your pics out and resize them then repost them if you wish . Do you know how to resize them ? If not I can do it for you and I can e-mail them back to you . ? ;) You will have to upload them in resized version yourself though . Let me know if you need help . ;D

I have and use an 8" spoon..works fine as long as it's sharp. This thing is very old..i'm 40, and can remember my dad using it when I was 3 or 4.
