Pair of tire chains, what tires to put them on?
« on: Feb 07, 2018, 08:14 PM »
I got a pair of tire chains for my 4wd ram 1500 for going out on the ice with a trailer.  What tires should i put them on if i only have a pair.  I was first thinking front left and right rear but also thought that with the weight in the bed of the truck and the tongue weight that putting them on both rear tires would be best.  Anyone have the right answer?

I also have a Ram 1500. I don’t know what rims you have, but I’d be careful those chains don’t tear them up. With one set of chains, I’d put them on the rear. If you’re chaining up, why not get another set and chain all 4?

I got these and have yet to use them on the ice/snow but when i put them on in the garage they seemed to clear the rims pretty well.  Reason for not buying more of anything would be $

I was first thinking front left and right rear.
Have you thought going in a circle is not a good idea?

A "Load-leveler" hitch puts some of the trailer tongue weight on the towing vehicle front axle.  That aids in moving in the direction of steer. Chains also help that, if on the front axle ONLY, ( If only one pair of chains are used ).

NEVER USE/INSTALL CHAINS "ONE TO EACH AXLE"!

Best check your owner's manual and/or with the dealer/manufacturer of the vehicle.

Plan well and live to fight another day.    ;)2

If you end up putting them on the front, make sure you tighten them extremely well. Can't tell you how many brake lines I change in the winter due to peoples tire chains being loose and ripping them off. Also on the rears be careful as well the new ford and gm trucks have wheel speed sensors that can possibly get hit  by loose chain parts.  Just a few things to watch out for. Hope all works out for you.

Attend and listen up.   The OP stated he has a Ram.   And, his link to his chains on Amazon, clearly indicate those are the latest perfection in chain development, they SELF-TIGHTEN.
As Aunt Peggy said as she put the pie on the window sill to cool, "What could possibly go wrong?."      ;)2

I like them on the front to help steering. Also is helpful if you have differential lock. Key thing is to go SLOW so that they do not hit the brake lines, etc.
