M18 Fuel - 8" Lazer or Mora?
« on: Oct 30, 2017, 07:38 AM »
I just ordered the 2704 M18 Hammer Drill to pair up with an auger for this upcoming season.  I already have a 8" Lazer hand auger, but I've been reading about the auger binding up at the bottom of the hole. I will NOT be using a Clam drill plate because I'll also be using the drill with an ice screw adapter, so I need to be able to switch between the auger and screw adapter quickly on the ice.

Is the binding with the lazer really that bad?  Does a Mora have the same binding issue? I really don't want to spend a bunch more money on a K-drill or Nils...

Just ease up on the pressure and keep up your speed  when you are about to break through and the laser cuts just fine. Guys get pretty nitpicky sometimes. I know what they’re talking about with the binding, but if you do what I said you will have no problem.

Yep ...its a bit of a learning curve at first that you overcome quite quickly...my only concern is the 8 inch lazer ...most recommend a 6 inch or less ..good luck keep us posted on tour results .

Thanks for the quick replies, guys!  I'll stick with my 8" Lazer then.  I like having the handle as a backup as well vs a K-Drill.

Only problem with the 8" is that it's a battery buster.  If your hole hoping bring extras! But the drill seems to handle it okay.  My cousin bailed on his 8" and takes the 6" using the M18. And last year in NY we didn't exactly have a whole lot of ice to cut through.

I use a ryobi... 8" holes made it start smoking after 2 holes in 6" of ice!  (Mora hand auger with clam plate) but the drill only cost 80 bucks

I don't hole hop a whole lot.  I've got an Otter hub shanty that's not as mobile as a flip shanty.  I'm also in Ohio, so the ice doesn't get ridiculously thick, and when it does, my dad has a Jiffy Pro 4 Lite that we bought when the ice on Lake Erie was 25"+.  I probably didn't even need to drill/auger combo, but I needed a drill anyways, so why not?  ;D

It should work out well for you then.  I can't remember exactly but somewhere in my pea brain I'm remembering about 12 holes per battery with the 8" mora and clam plate with his m18.  I am pretty sure he was using the batteries that came with the drill.  Don't remember the Amp hours on his batteries.

I have the 8" Kdrill on the Milwaukee hammer drill. I can get around 30 holes thru 12" of ice  with 1 5.0 amp battery. It is super smooth, no binding and the drill has never "smoked". Use the correct drill and you won't have to many issues.

Must have small batteries. I've have 4ah size batteries and have gotten about 30holes in 18in of ice with my 8in nils.

Also, a person needs to use a BRUSHLESS DRILL......a brushed drill will end in failure. A common every day picture hanging drill won't hold up.

Thanks for the input guys.  I'm going to try to sell my Lazer and just pony up for the Nils.   I've only used my Lazer to drill about 10 holes and also have a brand new set of swedish blades still in the package, so I can probably get a decent amount for it to put towards the Nils.

I’ve never used one of these set ups. Without using the clam plate, what keeps the auger from coming out of th chuck and plunging into the lake? The adapter somehow?

So I used a friend's Dewalt with a 6" Mora last year and was blown away. Decided to buy an adapter and try out my 8" Lazer with the Milwaukee hammer drill I already have.  Worked well but the drill is a 2602 with only 525lbs of torque and 3ah batteries.  It cut very well but I could only get about 8 holes on a battery (20" or so of ice). This year I found a Milwaukee 2705 at Fleet Farm (1200lbs) on clearance for 139.99 minus the 10$ off coupon I had and then got back another 14$ in "Mills Money". I bought it. I was hoping I could run the setup without having to buy new/more batteries. 2705 drill, ice master adapter, 3ah batteries, and 6" auger. I'm hoping the 6" auger will alleviate some stress on the battery but am looking for opinions on whether carrying the two 3ah batteries will be enough or bite the bullet and get a bigger battery.

Carrying two 3ah will work......however 1-9ah battery is hard to beat!

If weight is an issue, I don't think you are going to beat a Mora...

I have been using Milwaukee 2604 (725 lbs torque) drill with Clamplate and Strikemaster Lazier 8 inch auger for two seasons now. Never had any issues. I drill about 30 holes per trip. Only used up one 4amp/hr battery once on 12inch thick ice. Found a deal for Milwaukee 2704 (1200 lbs torque) and Gen 2 Clamplate. Going to try and put on 10 inch Mora auger this season and see what happens.
