Ice Reels, Trying Something New.
« on: Nov 18, 2017, 04:07 PM »
So been tossing a few ideas around my head and different styles to try for a while now. Been using spin cast reels for quit a few years and I like them they work fine but my issue is I built a box for my quad a couple years back (I posted pics) the compartment I built to hold the reels and rods is low profile and in order to get the reels in I have to fold over the handles kind of a pain. Thought about Bait Cast reels but everything up here is pretty pricey. Then been looking at some of the low pro ice reels they make these days they look alright. Then today was at a local sporting good stores and I saw these low end fly reels. I thought what the heck I'll give them a try. Very affordable of they don't work and very nice reel for the price. Filled them with approx 50' Dacron backing I had at home and about 50' mono. I think they will work quite fine, heck of a noisy clicker on them so will be able to hear when a fish spools line, be kind of like a mini mooching reel, which I love fishing salmon with. Most of my fishing is for walleye or pike so I think they will work great.

Not sure how'd they do on pike & walleye, but for shallow water panfish, I think they'd do well.

As for me, I'm a die-hard spin-cast/open face ice fisherman.  I'm not sold on the "fly-reels" for ice fishing.

Good luck in your equipment adventure.

Have fun with your fly reels.  I enjoyed mine for years and it's an art.  Plus they make for the best dead stick setup / rattling reel alternative.

I'm really a baitcasting reel setup guy.  I started with custom made rods as since there was never a market for it.  Even a spinning rod with a reel seat will take a baitcasting reel.  Unfortunately the investment is a steep price for a finesse setup. The advantages is far superior.  However it's not a necessity.  I can probably catch just as much fish with a spinning reel setup.
