Is that reel smooth?  I want an inline but my hand rests on the reel.  Wondering if I will just have to go with a 13 with a shield..

Yes the reel is smooth but the drag is very touchy.  I have read online people changing out the drag but have not tried.  I also wish the stem was longer making it easier to pencil grip without my hand touching the spool.  For the price they are nice.

I have an Eagle Claw.  It's a good reel, but like Chute82 said the reel stem is SHORT.  Even for a conventional grip I have to wedge my fingers in between the reel and the rod to use it.  Get a CGI no.8 or a One 3 descent reel instead.  If you watch the sales they're almost the same price as the EC - I paid $24 each for some One 3's from Fish USA - anything $30 or less is a good buy.
