Crystal Clear ice and reaction to air temps?
« on: Feb 20, 2006, 10:13 PM »
How does crystal clear ice react to warming temps vs. opaque ice? Presently here in northern Indiana we are getting our ice back albieit it's only about 3 inches max right now. Temps are supposed to apprach 40 for a few days although overnight lows will be below freezing. Temps will go much lower once again for th weekend.

Just curious.

Flinty hard clear ice and hard black ice hold up to warm daytime temps pretty well.
It's when it gets white is when it gets soft.  3" of ice won't last through a week of
above freezing daytime temps without some really cold nights.  But I like your attitude.  We have both been praying to the Ice Gods all winter and they have let us down.  I'm going to put the raft in on a private SE Mi lake in a couple of weeks and
get after the crappies and walleye.  Maybe you can come up and join me sometime
and straighten the curls out of your fishing line.

That's the hardest ice you can have and it will hold up a little better than the white ice.  Bright sunny days don't help, but warm days with cloud cover will usually not hurt it, especially if it gets below freezing at night.
Bring on the ice!!!!!!!  <br />

With daytime temps above freezing for the next 5 days and nighttime lows just
below freezing your clear ice will be toast by the weekend.  I was really pulling
for late ice but the high winds kept it from happening.

The more wind you get now,  the better...38 degrees with a 15-20 mph wind is alot different than 38 and sun.  Add in the nights below freezing and you might just make it.
