Canoe or Travel
« on: Feb 27, 2017, 12:19 PM »
So it's getting to be that in between time of year. Small game seasons are winding down and closing and the ice is disappearing fast, but still lingering in places. So the important question for this weekend is do I break out the canoe on the newly open water, or do I head north to hit some of the last remaining ice? I hate crowds and I just worry that all the nice northern lakes are going to be PACKED this weekend with people trying to fit in one last trip. I also hate the idea of packing up the ice gear this early. So whats everyone else doing; traveling or starting your open water season?

Im waiting to see what the wind does.   If its not roaring this weekend, there are some very good open water options available right now like brown trout in Lake Ontario, Salmon and Lakers in Champlain.

Plenty of ice fishing within an hours drive of my house if it will be windy.

I was thinking the same thing. I hate paddling the canoe in 10+mph winds. If it's not too bad I would love to hit Otsego, but if it's blowing hard I'll have to just find ice.

If it's near 15 mph winds I'm staying in either way.

Are the snows coming back up through yet? I didn't they'll be comin through for another 2 weeks or so. I would love to get set up on a field with a hundred decoys and try to get a limit of snows.
