King salmon or Steelhead out of the great lakes.  The kings make huge runs and jump.  The steelies are very acrobatic and fight to the death.

MUCH more fight than stripers that were bigger and heavier.

Bluefish will give a nice fight and fight till the end but they don't have the power of stripers. The stripers make nice smooth runs where as the blue jerk ya around a bit. I'd rather have a nice smooth running striper anyday.

So far the best fight I've gotten was a few hours of 20+lb p*ssed off coho salmon. They just never give up.

;D I said it once and after topping my previously biggest fish caught with a 9lb10oz. lake trout on wednesday I'll say it again

Lake Trout (through the ice)

they hit at 100kph and will take 50 feet of slack before you get to your line, they will do violent head shakes, roll in the line and rip 12lb test out of your hands with ease!

Pound for pound?  River smallies...they're just incredible fighters.  I catch them out of one hole, below this dam where there is heavy current, and man can those fish rip line off your spool...so much fun!!

Pure strength?  For freshwater and anadromous fish I'd say king salmon and steelhead...I'm going for steelies this weekend!  8)  Can't wait!!!!

For saltwater, how can you deny the pure strength of a big yellowfin or bluefin tuna?? :flex:

Nothing like steelhead fishing in creeks / rivers.  You can stand waist deep in water and have to look up at them when they jump.  That is awesome.  Try hooking the 80 feet down and have them surface and come 3 feet out of the water in seconds.

you arent kidding,.......bass are only fun in a river when there downstream and you half to fight em up imho. but when that steelie runs from 25 yards downstream, to 25 yards upstream.....and your trying to turn him.....awesome!!!!! id like to see any bass fight ya from upstream..... we just got set up with riggers this fall,  cant wait.....salmon on em already blew my mind  ;)

I am particullary fond of Large Smallies through the ice. It's fun catching them in the summer on a rod. But it's even better pulling those feisty fins in by hand!! Good stuff!

Tarpon by far in my experiences!!!! A 15 lb Tarpon will out fight the strongest 15 lb salt water salmon out there!! Or Steelhead for that matter. I landed a 200 lb Tarpon last May in Florida and the thing was launching 6 to 7 feet out of the water and going 20 feet at a time!! He did that probly 6 or 7 times . It was awsome!! I would suggest it to anyone. It's just something every fisherman NEEDS to do! I used "Florida light tackle charters"  They dont set the hook for ya or any of that stuff. You do all the fishing yourself, on light tackle!! www.floridalighttackle charters.com  I have pictures but Im new to the board here and have not done my homework on how to upload them? Any help?THANX

The hardest fighting species I've had on were dogish (bowfin). I'm not epecially fond of them by any means and don't target them, but they sure make the drag scream. Believe it or not I occasionally mount them for customers.

Smallmouth are a close second.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

I would have to say, in my opinion, 10lb bluefish on a small rod with 12lb test, especially catching them with poppers and watchin them break the surface. :) :)

For offshore salt my vote would be a bluefin. They'll put a serious hurting on you followed my big mahi which jump like crazy and just don't quit.  Inshore; snook.  They'll burn your thumb trying to stop 'em from getting into the mangroves.

Fresh; pound for pound would have to be a nice smallie...they'll fight their hearts out.
