School project
« on: Feb 09, 2017, 10:37 AM »
This isn't ice fishing related but figured this would be a good place to get some good info. I'm doing a school research project on the Smith river mine and am looking for opinions, stories, experience or anything you have to say about it. I already have knowledge about it but I thought it would be cool to get other viewpoints or stories on how much it means to you. Thanks in advance!!

So I'm not sure what exactly you were looking for regarding replies, but I'll happily put in my two-cents on the Smith.  Five years ago, while I was still attending the University of Montana, one of my roommates drew a permit to float it in April, and I can say that it was an unbelievable journey.  Despite the unpredictable weather and low flows  of early spring, our crew of eight thoroughly enjoyed it.  I've since been in the Bob Marshall on several hiking-fishing trips and believe that the Smith rivals the experience.

I am a burgeoning libertarian, and believe that we need to encourage, rather than limit, economic opportunities for Americans.  However, I voted against the Smith River mine, because the river provides us with a rapidly diminishing opportunity to partake in a wilderness-like float, and I believe we need to protect it.  Now, I know the Smith River corridor is not a wilderness, and that floaters encounter signs of humanity (including an opportunity to golf), but for those four days, each fifteen mile stretch of water was ours and we definitely felt like we were in the wilderness.  With so few opportunities like this left in Montana, it seems foolish to put the river-corridor at potential risk.

If you need more specific details for your paper, feel free to pm me.  I'd be happy to share, but wasn't sure if the moderators wanted me writing an essay for a post!

I floated it with my family in august.  Great float, fishing wasnt that great though but did manage to get a couple rainbows.  Great views and great spots to camp on the river.  Its a must for every Montanan.  There are some real cool caves you can pull into on the side of the river and check out too.

A friend of mine drew a permit back in 2005.  We floated it in June for four and a half days.  The river was pretty low, but we still caught fish and had a great time.  It was an amazing trip that I plan to do again someday, hopefully with my children.  The Smith is a treasure that needs to be protected for all Montanans and future generations.  I am against the mine.  I am not some treehugger who is anti mining and oil, but these operations should not be done in environmentally sensitive areas like the Smith River corridor.
