Marcum Recon mounting options
« on: Oct 29, 2016, 07:59 PM »
Has anyone found which ram mount works good with the new recon camera? I would like to mount it to my Otter bars somehow. There is a picture of it mounted up like this on the box of the camera. Marcum says there are plenty of mounting options but doesn't say any more than that.

If there's a screw hole the back of it, check out www.quickclampoutdoors .com They have square mounts for the Otter shacks and a camera mount that could work for ya. How is the camera btw? Looking at getting one, the price point is solid

There is a screw hole pattern on the back of it. Looks like the five side of a dice but a rectangle instead of a dice. The camera is nice. I went with the recon 5 instead of the 5+. The DVR is cool but I would never use it really. I mean what good does it really do? Other than showing your buddies a picture or a video? The 5+ does display depth and direction though. Which to me is a lot more useful than a DVR. They advertise it as a scouting tool and IMO the cheaper recon should have depth and direction as well because of that. But for 130 bones I'll use my flasher for depth I guess. The camera pixels/picture is the same in both cameras as well.

As a scouting tool, the temp & depth will show you the thermocline if the fish are suspending at a certain depth and you can use that on other parts of the lake, direction is obvious for staying on top of roaming schools, and some of us real nerdy guys have ran the dvr into a 3d tv and you can see the plankton that they are feeding on and study the movements more lol at the very least, scounting for tournaments my partner and I record so we can compare the fish we found to make a better plan of attack.

Back to the original question about the mount...If there is a center hole than the Quickclamp should hold it

I believe the Recon has a 1/4 20 screw hole if so ...

Go with a GoPro jaws mount or a knock off version via Amazon ....

https://www.amazon.com/Captain-Clamp-Mount-Adjustable-Camera/dp/B010053574/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477835506&sr=8-1&keywords=go+pro+jaws+mount

get a 1/4 20 adapter...

 https://www.amazon.com/Arkon-GoPro-Connection-Camera-Adapter/dp/B00IQ7PRHU/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&qid=1477835641&sr=8-25&keywords=go+pro+1+4+20+adaptor

I can mount my AV micro atop my Vexilar /shelters hoop pole/5 gallon bucket ..  entire mount  set up or  w/the Clamp ...w/o the "snake" mount .

Clamp w/o snake atop my Vexilar ...to my shelter hoop pole

I like the spring clamp rather then the ...screw type clamp from AV .

Hardwater diehard, thanks for the ideas. I like that clamp mount and I think I'll go with that. Thanks for taking the time and replying. How do you like it? In your opinion, is that the way to go or would you do something different next time?

The Jaws mount IMO is the way to go ...I think its more versatile ...round/square/flat objects no bother ..plus I can add my action camera with the same mount  .This season going to make a mount on a Genz blue box for my AV Micro 5 w/DVR ...so when in the elements its a little more rough n tumble . Its nice on the hoop pole ..eye level when your watching tip ups / tip downs with your shelter door open and jigging ..and I can push the DVR button EZPZ ...atop my vex is nice for shelter fishing w/o tip ups . But I usually fish with 3 holes in my shelter I fish on the left side....dead stick on my right side ...and one hole in between /camera hole w/my "directional clamp "...EZPZ rotating when needed and can hit the record button . I have two AV cameras a Micro 5 and I won a Micro plus both w/DVR ...love the Micro Plus for scouting.

I went with this setup. I also had to purchase a go pro camera clip to make it work in order to attach the 1/4 inch adapter to the jaws mount- just in case someone is thinking about going this route FYI.

Catchcover is always a good options as well for your mounting options. They offer their pro snake mount with a 1/4 x 20 mount. They offer two options for mounting, their c-clamp style of their more permanent mounting options with quick disconnect option

Always a creative option on there to mount these great little units.

This place   https://snakeclamp.com/   is AWESOME.  Anything you could possibly want.  One of them is under the Christmas tree right now to hold my Fishphone iPad on the support bars of my otter.

I just got the Recon 5 and I'm having the same dilemma about mounting options. Most likely I'll be wanting to mount it to my portables pole and have the camera extended closer to my face. Does the adjustable neck hold up the weight 2lb weight of the recon without it bending the neck or slipping the clamp? Specially what other piece did you need (go pro camera clip)? Did you need to remove the camera reel to make it work?

I just ordered the Recon 5, and I’m looking into mounts for my flip-over. From the pics I’ve been able to find, it looks like the screw holes are underneath the cable spool? Is ¼” screw hole still accessible with the spool attached?

I have only had my Recon 5+ for a week now, but NOT happy with picture / video on laptop. Marcum definitely dropped the ball on their image and video file formats for the Recon 5+. On my Windows 10 laptop the pics appear all stretched out so your fish look long and skinny. Same with video. Same when cast to my Samsung smart TV. Very frustrating! When every other camera in the world is plug-n-play compatible for viewing images on PC, Mac, iPhone, Android, cloud, Smart TV, etc, WHY would Marcum store video and pics in a strange incompatible file type? If you are considering the 5+ over the 5 just for the DVR capability (and not the temp, depth, direction enhancements) you better check this out further. Anybody remember BetaMax? I do not want to have to convert files or download special viewers just to see my pics and video with a normal aspect ratio.

I have not tried it yet (no ice in Ohio!), but I used a Ram ball with ¼” 20 thread to attach the Recon 5 to a RAM transducer mount attached to the sled of a Clam. It looks good in the garage. I will give it a try later this week on some Michigan ice, and upload some pics.
