Treble hooks for everything on tip ups. Tried single hooks in the past and ended up with a lot of lost fish.

The trout where I'm not panning on fishing must be 12+ inches to keep. Is a size 4 treble small enough in your guys opinion

#12 or #14 red treble hooks.
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day.  Teach a man to ice fish and he'll sit on the ice and drink beer all weekend.

I use a 12 treble or two 14 trebles hooked lip and behind dorsel. With two trebles you need some care when handling a fish.

I believe it's size 4 single hook. I'm not positive, but I think with a single hook it's the opposite size wise. The larger  the number you go, the bigger...opposed to the treble. I myself, I like a 14 size treble for browns and bows and a 10 for lake trout.

Since zebras have been around and water clarity has improved I have gone to using circle hooks of various sizes along with florocarbon leaders for all my ice fishing. It does take some getting use to not setting the hook but I believe I get more hits, catch as many fish, have very few bite off, and fish are more easily released. Generally fish are hooked in the corner of the mouth. Tip ups are also more easily stored and handled with a single hook.i I will admit that on rare occasion the hook doubles back and hooks into the bait and fish is not hooked

I've only been ice fishing for about 6 years but have never understood the use of treble hooks on tip ups.  Do you rig up with them on the soft water?  If not, why would you on the ice?  There is no worse hook to use if you plan on releasing any fish.  To me the "quick strike" arguement is an excuse.  I've never used trebles and try to use circle hooks if using bait, just let the fish run with it awhile.  This is just my humble opinion.

Eagle for some fish it would be hard because don't forget it's different with a tip up. You don't have the ability to set the hook like in regular fishing. Some fish like pike single hooks would never work. But for trout I'm not sure that's why I started the topic
