Charging issue with Marcum LX6s
« on: Jan 17, 2017, 05:57 PM »
My sons LX6 s has a charging issue, not sure what it is.  I have an LX7, so we took the charger from mine hooked up his battery didn't charge.  So we took his battery hooked everything up to mine n it's charging. The best I can figure is it's his terminals coming from the unit.  Once charged the unit works fine. Any ideas guys? Have a call in to marcum, waiting for return call.

?? that's confusing.. you did the same thing twice with diff results?? your charger and his battery, then his battery and your charger??

It only charges when I take my battery completely out of my unit and put his in, then it charges, that's why I think it has something to do with his wires from the unit to the battery.

Got it. I didn't realize it must be a built in charger. My Lowrance has a separate charger.

I have had some fuses pop in my old marcum.  Check that first.  Marcum customer service is very good and will fix issue.  I had a Showdown that they needed to send me a new wiring harness and fixed the issue on not staying on.

swap fuses to find out. easy to see if it's burnt out tho.
you could put a battery tender jr right on the battery terminals and charge it too.

you could ring out (ohms test or continuity test end to end of the wires) the wire harness. it has to be that tho now.
or you could bring your wire harness to his lx6 and would be quicker. if you want to know where his is broke, ring it out.
it's probably in the wire that has the fuse holder in it.

I had an issue like that with my LX9 this year. I cleaned the terminals on the battery up and cleaned the terminals on the unit best I could and it started to charge no problem.

good info!
so it would function, but not charge or wouldn't do any thing until you cleaned them?

some times they just get sloppy on the battery so you have to pinch them so they make better contact too.

with a digital volt meter (dvm) works best. but you use one probe on one end of the wire and take the other probe and put it to the opposite end and read if it has resistance (if you set your meter to ohms) or if it sounds (if you set your meter for continuity). just trace each wire end to end. if it doesn't show continuity or near zero ohms, then there is an open wire. open wire means no power can get thru it.

it would be much faster to swap harness's to test them to see if that is whats wrong. if it is and while his is out, then you can test it easier.

if it's under warranty call them to let them know you think it's the harness. if you have to pay for one and don't want to waste money, then you should test/ring (we say ring because this test it easiest using the dvm in continuity mode and it will make a ringing sound so we call it "ring it") it.
if it's holding him up from fishing, just buy one.
these meters are only 6$ at harbor freight or free with their coupon they send in the mail or on their web page.

now that i think of it, some one had broken a pin on a used lx6 or 7. not sure how they did that, but inspect the pins on each connector too. it was on the power cable connector. marcum sent a new one and he had his friend solder it in.
