6 pound mono. If you are using a flasher pay close attention and hit them the instant they bite. If you wait and let that jig get past their teeth odds are you will get cut off. I dont use a leader but if you choose to you will have more leeway.

Rio and afv make tiable steel leader and that's what I usually use on my jig stick or tip ups fishing for pike. You can get anywhere from 15 to 50lb. Attach that to a swivel to ur ice/jig line and it will prevent u from getting bitten or broken off. Have never found pike to be "line shy". I've caught them ripping lipless crankbaits up from the bottom or just dead sticking shiners if your in an active area. I've even had em hit my Hali's with a maggot on it. Just go to where the pike are and jig!!! Good luck

I have luck jigging bucktails tipped with shiners. Also just letting it sit mid water column.

Use 2lb test and tie on your most expensive lure. You are guaranteed to have one bite. ;)

A 15# fluorocarbon leader will give you a good presentation

i brought up a 4lb Northern recently on a tungsten micro jig tipped with a Gulp minnow head. it just happened, but i was able to land it successfully. that was a freak incident, however. normally if i'm targeting Northerns i'll switch over to heavier test, a thick leader, and something big, shiny and metal. generally i use spoons or Rappala jig shads.
