To me it has one redeeming feature. The clicker stays on when in free spool. So I like to use it as my deadstick set up. That way I can pay closer attention to my jigging rod and whats going on on the fishfinder. The clicker gives me an audible sound. The tension is enough with clicker engaged to keep even a large minnow from making any sound. Have yet to try on chubs though.

The most annoying thing about reel is the tendency for line to wrap around the no8 insignia knob. Have to pay close attention to that.

In summation its worth keeping if you deadstick.

Another caveat is don't forget to engage reel prior to setting hook. I have managed to look like an idiot on a hookset or two.

Its a good reel, used it for 2 seasons and had no problems with it, just adjust the spool speed before dropping the lure to the weight of your jig so it doesnt spin faster than it should to avoid bird nest

Keep it and form your own opinion. There are fixes to some issues they may have, or it might work ok right from the box.

I really like mine. I mainly use it for jigging panfish, paired with an HT UL superflex rod.

I'm going to try it as a dead stick, that was a good idea mentioned with the clicker! If it doesnt work well for that, i will start sending PMs. Man do i hate that reel! love the snitch rod that it came on though!!

I got one earlier this season and have used it 3 times so far for crappies.  Works just fine for me.  This is my first inline reel and I really like fishing with it.  The reel itself feels a bit cheap/plastic but it worked just fine.  The drag isn't perfect and the spool speed control is a "friction" control vs. a magnetic control so that isn't the best either but it does the job.

On a side note, I fished with a buddy of mine last week that was fishing with a Black Betty 6061 and he was having the same problem described with the line jumping off the spool and wrapping on the outside knob.  What was happening was he was spooling line off the reel on the drop similar to what you would do with a spinning reel by lowering the rod tip, etc.  As a result, the line was "over-spooling" and coming off the spool and getting itself onto the outside knob.  My point here is that if you let the reel control the drop of the jig and if you have the free-spool speed set correctly based on the weight of the jig, this line jump should not happen.

Holehopper, you are exactly right about the line getting off the reel. After the first time it happened on my 6061 I started paying attention on how the reel was freespooling. Saw what Indid the second time it happened. After that no issues! Although the second time it happened I had to hand hall the fish that was on my line in! In addition to the no 8 reel I got a gift card. Going to take it back use the refund and the card to get another 6061.

for the price its a  decent reel.i took mine apart but didn't grease anything.grease will make the reel stiffen up in real cold weather.i did drop some reel oil  here and there but for me its so off balance and the way I pencil grip by holding the reel its awkward and the spool rubs my hand.i think the eagle claw inline is pretty close to this reel and didn't expect a Cadillac at a chevette price tag.free spool is alright and you get a couple years out of the line with less coil from the larger spool.but I find myself going to my spinning reel first still.i thought the bait alarm is kind of useless.

I'd keep it and give it a fair try.  It might take a little while to get the drag set and tension set so the line stops feeding when the jig hits something but I think you'll like it in the end.

I've used mine quite a bit this week and am liking it more and more. I think I may add 1 or 2 more to the collectiion. Nice smooth freespool and retrieve. Drag does its job and haven't had any trouble with backlash at all.
