Keeping perch alive for weigh in
« on: Dec 30, 2016, 09:09 PM »
I am doing a perch fishing tournament in january and we have to keep 50 perch alive for weigh in. We are thinking of just using buckets and aerators but looking for other ideas
safe ice, tight lines and god bless!

Keep 'em cold and oxygenated. I would use a storage tote sitting on the ice. Get a walmart aquarium aerator, two large air stones, a small inverter and run it off a vex battery.

You'd be real surprised how well they do in a bucket or tote with slush and lake water.

Make a live well in the ice:

Drill 1 hole all the way through ice, then right beside this drill three or four holes a 1/4 of the way through in a straight line, ocean you have this completed drill a bunch of holes 3/4 deep in the shape of a big circle. Water will floor from 1st 100% open hole into your little make shift pond, and fish can't swim back out. I hope that all makes sense. 50 perch gonna require alot of drillingering though.

I've never had to keep fifty fish alive but I guess this would work. You would have to do several of these because of the numbers. I put my fish either in a mesh laundry bag or sometimes I save those mesh bags that you get cabbage heads in. When we buy cabbage for making saurer kraut they hold fifty pounds of cabbage and have a pull type draw string. I simply push this down an extra hole in the ice. It's just like having a livewell out on the ice. The fish stay alive and if I choose to release they are fine.   Lou

Scheels sells a live well that goes down into a hole. Think it goes for around $ 20.00.

Use a fish basket or two...only problem is you'd need a pretty good size hole.

I kept my fish directoy on ice for 8 hours+, when I got home I put them in the sink to clean them.  To my surprised they were all alive.  Even if frozen, after turning on the sink faucet, they were alive and jumping

I was wondering the same thing and bought a laundry bag for two bucks at Walmart.   I plan to make the bag 18" wide and have the draw string at the bottom.   The top will be open and attached to a 10" ring of plywood to keep it from going through the ice.   Won't pay $25 for similar intended for ice fishing.

You could make something like this with a laundry bag and swim noodle..

Until it freezes over and your sitting there chipping 50 perch out of the ice lol
