Buddy Heater heat shield , a-la Dave genz
« on: Nov 24, 2016, 03:33 PM »
Was watching a Dave Genz video , he was pointing out the things he did to his Fish Trap.   He had a metal heat-shield that covered the front of his Buddy heater to reduce the radiant heat so he could mount it inside the tub of his flipover.  Anybody ever try that ??

Yup, directs heat up (have a cooking rack on it too) to the ceiling where I have my fan pushing air back down in between seats. It is mounted at the back of tub behind us. On low w/fan going it's warm enough to fish in a tee shirt in my non thermal Nanook. Can't even run the buddy heater in my insulated, I use a little dandelion heater in that one, same deal (mounted behind me w/overhead fan).

Clears up space for fishing and don't have to worry about my line contacting heater when I hand pull fish up the hole.

Very cool, looks like it could be a weekend project. Figure out where to mount it in the flipover and make a heat deflector.

thanks

I mounted my heater in the back of my FX 100 too...

Can't imagine anyone using a heater on the ice/fishing area of a one man flip...

I have a spring loaded wind bar that keeps the back tight...

I can actually move it around with the heater Running..

Also if the wind shifts and I'm not inside, the heater moves with the shanty...

I added a 1" square tubing to front of my Frabill two man tub ...added two screws and then hung my Portable Buddy via the wall mount ...did the same to my buddys one man Frabill ..but added the tubing to rear seat support added two screws and hung the heater...both stay put ..EZPZ to turn on/off . Keeping the heat in the shelter is nice ...and not a lot of water to deal with in your fishable area .

You can add all sorts of brackets/mounts to rear of buddy heater to accommodate your desired fit and location needs .

Seen a video where DG mounted a piece of PVC pipe 6 or 8 inches in diameter to the rear of his shelter and placed  his  1 lbs and Lil Buddy into it .

also seen them mounted to the milk crate itself...keeps it steady

I put my heater behind me once.  I melted the zipper on my Ice Armor jacket without realizing it was happening.  Noe it goes up front as 3300 shows.

It's all a choice, really.. I choose not to put stuff that burns near my heater..

It's pointed up some, so stuff under my bench (milk crate and lp tank, stays warm but not hot..

X4 that's why I went catalytic heater with 1500 btus max for my one man if I was to bring a buddy heater in it I probally would die from a aphixeation. . TrI'd my lantern, it about knock me out in less then a minute of use..  that why I also went with led fog lights instead of Lantern light.. when fishing crappie.. a catalytic  heater is good for a one man mostly adjustable like 0 to 3000btus like that I think it was Stansport brand that had the 3000 btu model catalytic heater I got the colemen sport cat I don't think is strong enough for over nighting it in the one man..

Made an aluminum heat shield this morning, tried it out for 10 mins in the garage.  It worked great to deflect the radiant heat ...but it deflected back at the handle and the handle got so hot I couldn't pick it up.  Back to the drawing board.

I have seen people take a steel mesh paint roller thingy and bend it.   They use it as a hot plate for food.  You could rig a steel plate to that
