There is ice all the way across Shelburne Pond today. I didn't walk on it and didn't see where anybody else had. It might be an inch or so thick near shore. I could see minnows swimming under it right up to shore, so it's no more than a thick glazing.

Shelburne Bay has shore ice near the access, so the lake is getting colder.
May the fish be with you.

Went on the boat yesterday in malletts bay. Temperature at the ramp was 32-33 and out in the inner bay it was about 37-38 degrees.

Seen a picture of a guy fishing in rouses point on a bucket. Also seen a picture of where a guy went through. Yes we are all excited for first ice. But keep in mind that fishing on thin ice doesn't only put your life in danger but it also puts anyone else's life in danger that may have to rescue you. Be smart.

I'll be boating again this week. Fishing on thin ice just for the sake of being first is for the birds.
May the fish be with you.

I'll be on the ice somewhere next weekend. Hopefully the snow misses us and we make lots of ice this week.

This snow isn't going to help us one bit! It's light stuff so maybe with a little wind might blow it off

I really prefer having at least six inches of ice under me, I've fished on less, sure, but my sense of safety and security increases with the thickness of the ice. From there, it can be anywhere up to the reach of the auger and I'm happy.

Sure, I can be okay standing on three inches of decent ice, but what if there's a gent who comes over to ask if I have any Grey Poupon he can borrow? What if someone else comes over to see what the two of us are talking about and then some more see the sudden gathering and move closer because there seems to be "more action over there"? Pretty soon we're all taking a swim... oh the humanity!

Be safe, everybody.
May the fish be with you.

Actually, I went fishing on the ice in a few places in the southern part of NEK. Ice was up to five inches where there wasn't snow, but where there was cover ice was much thinner. Buddy and I caught a few perch jigging on both days.

I don't know about you guys, but this storm didn't do very much at all at my house. Only about two inches of snow fell in any one place and a lot of it has drifted away. I don't think it will affect ice production too much. Can't wish to hit the hardwater after Christmas. Good luck to all and be safe.

I tried a couple spots in Chittenden County Saturday.  Tested the ice on Shelburne.  4 inches, but not all black, and it got a little thinner as I went out farther.  Almost enough ice but not quite.  If I'd been with a buddy I probably would have fished.  I could see that a few others had been there to test the ice, but they hadn't ventured out.  I have a feeling that Kenny came to mind for all of us, and instilled extra caution.  His shrine is still there.

I did find some other fishermen on another pond with 4.5 inches of good ice (thinning to 3.5 towards the middle), so I fished and caught some nice gills for supper.

Spud bar every couple steps.  Drill test holes often.  Carry picks.  Float suit.  Throw rope.  Don't fish alone.

It was so close to being enough ice!  Today's warm rain was really a bummer.  That cold snap wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

I took a boat ride to chase pike this AM and caught two really nice ones and several smaller ones. The bays on Champlain and other sheltered areas are glazed over but very thin. There were chunks of ice here and there where I was but nothing that presented a problem (I was rowing today, so no motor issues), all in all a good outing.

I love ice fishing, but none of the ice I've seen so far was thick enough for me to want to rush out on it. It's definitely going in the right direction, but it needs a little more time below freezing IMO. Of course I keep hearing people talk of fishing on 3 inches... 2 inches... etc. etc. and you know: I always stay dry in my boat. :)

3 inches of good ice is, in theory enough to stand on and fish, but if you happen to walk over a thin spot, or a place where the ice is a little weaker, or a couple of other people come over to see what you're catching...

Is that fish really worth a swim in freezing water?

I'll let everybody make their own call on that, and keep using the boat for just a little bit longer. :)

Be safe everybody.
May the fish be with you.

Randy
