Pop up shanty windows
« on: Nov 11, 2016, 12:16 PM »
Was thinking of cutting a large hole out of 1 side of my shanty and trying to sew or glue in a larger lower window. When I am sitting jigging the small windows are to high to see out of. Has anyone ever tried this?
A bad day of ice fishing is better than any day at work!

Why are you needing to see out of them? If it's just to see flags, I would say it would be easier to put sound alarms on your flags so you can hear them rather than need to see them.

I agree that it would be easier to put an alarm on your tip-ups.  I personally think you're taking a chance on the material fraying and pulling apart even if you re-enforce it with a layer of heavier material.

shappell sells replacement windows you could incorporate. if you don't sew, take it to a shoe repair place or call them first to get a price.
i want to use them for storm windows one day, but just the outer flap.

these have velcro sewn on them. your cut out would need the other half of it to stay removable. just look at how your windows are now to figure out how to sew it in.

I use window alarms that you can buy at Menards or most dollar stores. They cost less then a buck a piece and you never have to worry about looking at your tip ups again. If I were you I would definitely consider tip up alarms.

I usually put my tip ups in a straight line. Line up the pop up door with the traps. unzip the door in the center
Just enough to see them and fold over and use clothspins to hold. There's my vent also. Works good for me

Couple of photos on how I attached the noise maker to a Cross tip up.
cut a small piece of plywood 1/8" to size of window alarm and attached it to the cross bar with 1/2" screws and a drop of Gorilla glue
Attached the main body of the alarm to the side of the plywood.
added a small piece of sheet metal to the area where the attached part goes using double stick tape

drilled holes on top and bottom of the removable part and attach fish line to each the bar and flag.
