Drop shot through the ice?
« on: Jan 08, 2017, 08:35 PM »
I've caught largemouth through the ice on jigging spoons and lipless cranks, but I've never tried drop shot with soft plastics before. I do very well with that tactic in open water, just wondering if anybody has ever tried it through the ice? Might be a good, subtle way to get them when they're not being aggressive...... Any thoughts?
To jig or not to jig... That is the question.

I've done that quite a bit in the past, I would usually use a buckshot or some other heavier lure on the bottom instead of just a weight. The 1" gulp minnows and curly tails were a favorite tipper also the powerbait blood worms or just maggots.

I guess I set my tip downs for perch with a drop shot type of rig. Bell sinker at the bottom, hook on a short lead a foot or so up. Drop the line to the bottom, wrap slack up, and your bait is at the set depth.

Might work for jigging of you knew what depth the fish were at and weight was spooking them. You could set the weight at the bottom and have your bait tied on a dropper a set distance off bottom to where the fish would strike.
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable,
a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

Do it all the time. Works great for all species.
