Hair Jig Help
« on: Oct 17, 2016, 01:19 PM »
Hello Ice shanty, suppose I should introduce myself first. Im a college student in Bemidji Minnesota looking forward to the sight of first ice. What I am interested in is starting to tie hair jigs for crappies and bluegills. Not really sure where to start. What materials/devices do I need? what are some good youtube videos explaining hair jig tying? any help is appreciated, thank you!

Swing over to Taber's Bait there in Bemidji. There's a lot of knowhow in that place and they're helpful or at least they were to me.
That's a nice little town you've got there. Real pretty girls.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

There is about as much information at crappie dot com / jig tying and lure making as I have been able to find any where.

Also check out the jigging section lower on this forum.
Are you looking to make your jigs from bare jig hooks or buying the pre-made bare jigs?

Thanks for the neat link Erik! I've got a pile of resources but this had not been one of them. I've accumulated a couple of dozen or so jig molds over the years and can't wait to get 'em all hot and do neat stuff with the offspring. Just had a guy ask me today about some more jigs for spring river fishing.

That's a nice little town you've got there. Real pretty girls.

Really? From a guy with your handle???  ;D ;)2

To the point: tying hair is easy and not. There is a learning curve but it is navigable. I tied some "float n fly" hair jigs a number  of years ago to apply that presentation. Pretty easy and just as effective below the ice as it is in late fall.

My son started this a few months back watching a youtube video, find a dead deer on the side of the road and cut off the tail. Take the tail home and cut it open and spread it out and put some borax on it. Go to your local sporting goods store and ask someone who has knowledge of flying ties what you would like to accomplish. Then take the deer hair and cut some off with scissors and tie your first jig.

Of course you could always buy the deer hair at your local sporting goods store but if you find a dead deer along the road you feel like you are saving money.

This is the video that started the craze
