CHANGING TIP UP LINE
« on: Oct 18, 2016, 11:20 AM »
How often should you change your tip up line and is it OK to just reverse it so the "used" part of the line is on the bottom of the spool?  Just seems to me that the 50 - 60 lb test line should be good for quite some time.  I usually just cut of 10 yards or so each year and I'm good to go.

Depends on what type of line you use, I think ice braids should last forever on a tip up. The vinyl stuff holds coils badly, even if you try to stretch it, and mono can get nasty too.

I use 40 pound dacron braid on my tip-ups for the main line and have left it on for ten years with no problems.  After the main line I have a barrel swivel and then six feet of 10 pound Spider Wire EZ-Braid (it has the same line diameter as 4 pound) because some of the lakes I fish have lots of hungry pickerel.  I haven't had any bite throughs or line breaks but every year I change out the Spider Wire leader.  The nice thing about the Spider Wire EZ-Braid is it has very little to no memory.

That Dacron stays pretty good, so I never really change it, unless i notice something going on.  I usually put on new 'leaders' every year, and change them up if they start getting a little nicked up, etc....

i use the black 30-40lbs tip-up line and i havent changed it in years......in my dads old house on mille lacs he had similar stuff on his rattle reels and its been on those for 20+ years.  the only thing i change is my leader (from my swivel on down)
