Little Sodus Bay
« on: Feb 21, 2016, 10:46 AM »
There doesn't seem to be much activity on the bay. I went out one time the end of January for an hour and caught a half dozen good sized perch and bluegills. There was 2 other fisherman. The next day the ice was covered with water. Did not have creepers so I didn't go out. I finally went back out this past Thursday after going out on the pond (big mistake. Dulled my auger). I was the only one to brave the ice. There was 8" covered by 3" of slush topped with an 1" of crusted snow. Friday I saw another person on the eastern side of the bay. Yesterday there were 2 others on the eastern side.
Not doing very well catching anything of decent size. One or two keepers a day. It has been some time since I have ice fished but now I am recently retired and hoping to do more but the weather hasn't been very conducive this year.

Linc - I see that it is your first post, so welcome aboard.
I drove by Little Sodus earlier today, as I do occasionally, and saw very little activity. I'm curious as to why. It seems like there should be good bluegill and perch, but without the sand to dull augers.
Thanks for your report. I'm hoping it will generate more info.

Thank you for the welcome.  I am also curious as to the few fishing. I tend to think it is because of the weather conditions this winter. It has been a number of years since I have fished the bay so I am unsure of the state of weeds or lack of. Maybe it doesn't help with the time I am fishing, mostly late morning. Or it is the fact I just have not located the hot spots yet.

Bug sodus bay is the same way. Used to slam jumbo for years..then one year  it Just seemed to be dinks . I think it has to have something to do with the gobies.

I went out on the Little Sodus today and must have found a good spot to drill. I poked 2 holes and stayed there for 5 1/2 hrs. I got a couple dozen decent sized perch and 5 bluegills. Threw back 3-4 dozen dinks. I got there around 10AM . There was one guy fishing on the east side. A little after noon another fisherman showed up on the side I was fishing. He only stayed for a couple of hours and caught one keeper perch.
There was 10" of ice with no slush on top. That made for some easy walking.

Are there good access points to the southern part of the bay? I'm only familiar with the park on the north end.

On west bay rd......first right by restaurant (think turtle bay) and east side town launch by a little bar.

Yes. West Bay Rd. Turn right at King Rd which will be your first right. Turtle Cove Restaurant is right next to the boat launch. Minimal parking but if the restaurant is closed you could use their parking lot. If not park along the side of the road. If you see a red PT Cruiser there I will be on the ice.

I fished there yesterday during the rain. I fished for a couple of hours and left with 4 perch. Tossed a dozen or so dinks back down the hole.

BTW. When I left there was 1-2" of rain water on the ice. That was around 11:30AM.

Icejohn, Linc

Thanks for the info.  Now I'm hoping the ice will survive this weather so I can give it a try. I fished Port Bay some last year, but would prefer Little Sodus since it is a little closer.

I too am hoping the ice survives. I am hoping to fish it Saturday and possibly Sunday. I would really like to get more fish into the freezer.

I have never been to Port Bay. Many moons ago I fished some at Sodus between Leroy Island and the main land.

Stopped by the west side to check ice conditions. There was a narrow strip of open water at the ramp but I was still able to get onto ice. I didn't have a spud or auger so I didn't go too far, but the ice looked like it might be okay for tomorrow. Just stay away from docks or streams

I went back out yesterday. Arrived at 8:30AM and caught nothing but dicks till 10:00 when I finally caught a keeper bluegill. I stayed till 3PM ice was getting sloppy, ice was starting to get pretty thin and breaking up at the boat launch. I ended the day with a dozen bluegills/sunfish and 2 perch. Tossed back at least 2 dozen small sunfish, at least as many perch dinks and 2 small bass.

I fished Little Sodus over the weekend. Left with 3 perch and a bluegill Saturday. Sunday started out slow and caught a couple of 6-7" perch. Relocated to water that was a couple feet shallower and made a killing on bluegills and sunfish. I ended the day with 5 perch and 1/3 of a bucket of bluegills and sunfish. I spent a couple of hours fileting the fish when I got home.

There were still only a two others fishing the bay.

Linc - good job on the bluegills and sunfish.  I knew they had to be there somewhere.

Hey buddy, how you doing? Maybe next year on the pike. Sold off my tip-ups years ago. Sorry buddy but like I told you on FB, they are already fileted and in the freezer. LOL. I didn't see your post until after they were done and frozen.

CNYperch the other fisherman there over the weekend and also there for a couple of hours Monday fishes mostly for perch hasn't been doing good. He has tried all over the bay with little success. But he did get one huge perch on a jig. He was also running minnows on tip-downs and catching a few 7-8" here and there. With all the perch I have caught over the last month all but 2 have been female. And most have been full of minnows.

Is the ice out yet over there?  I am hoping to get my kayak on the lake tomorrow and hoping the boats can't launch yet so I don't have to dodge planer boards.
I prefer a 2oz sinker for perch...when it hits 'em they won't feel a thing

I am not sure. I haven't been back there. I was going to go check it out but I've gotten tied up with other things around the house.
