Mashapaug last nite
« on: Feb 20, 2016, 05:44 AM »
Mashapaug  strikes again , 7 hrs fishing and not a flag. Fished till 9:30 or so . Fished with and met some good guys.( Sorry guys I'm terrible with names but you know who you were) Didn't see a flag from anyone around us but had fun. Not real cold , breezy with a little sleet and snow late. Saw ice anywhere from 6 to 10 inches where we fished. Spudded out to mouth of cove where you could see clear fresh ice. Started hitting 4 inchs of soft ice before I got to it . Spud was going thru easy the closer I got to new ice so I got my fat butt back to the thicker hard stuff. On another note , I left a small green bag with a simms shirt and a pair of mittens about half way up cove on left side . Anybody finds them today PM me , I would appreciate getting them back. Thanks :icefish:

Nice to meet some of the 'Mashapaug crew' last night. I fished from 10 A.M. until dark - one flag, felt like a 7-inch perch before it got off. My buddy left at 2 P.M. - flagless. Thank goodness for the charcoal-fired kielbasa...and the brandy helped, too.

I think 'mashapaug' is an Indian word for 'no fish'.  Had my first walleye night fishing adventure Sat. , from 3:30 to 11 P.M. Not a flag (except for one I think the minnow set off). Counting Friday, 15+ hours w/o a fish??  //  But I enjoyed last night. Neat watching the full moon rise thru the trees. After the breeze subsided, so silent I'm sure I could hear the flags coming up (if that had happened). Again, met some nice guys enjoying what I enjoy. No charcoal fire this time - PB&J sandwich for supper - tasted great.  Maybe next year?

stayed out until 12:30am last night. No flags. A couple marks on the sonar. But no luck. Has anyone caught any walleye there this year. This was my second time going for them this year at mashapaug with no luck. It was nice to meet flukey though.

My buddy went up Sunday afternoon. We meet up with them after hiking out of Breakneck. They got three brown trout and a yellow perch. They said it was slow but some action. There was twice as much ice as there was on Breakneck. Use extreme caution out there. The ice was super sketchy on the way out. I saw a hiker go through on Saturday up to his knees trying to get off on an island. My friend saw two hikers with fully loaded packs go in on the other shoreline. We had a good time. Great weather for camping but not so good for the ice. We caught a ton of pickerel some bass but nothing over 2lbs and a couple crappie. A guy down the way from us got a 5+ lb bass. Also saw the bald eagle all weekend.

This weekend they'll strike with the cold front coming!
Is it sometimes a fish being caught or you?

4 wheeler atv's are not legal in Bigelow or CT State Forest. Only registered snowmobiles

Thought so!!  I had a long discussion with a game warden at breakneck a few years back and he was quite adornment about the use of 4 wheelers on state properties.  Play buy the rules gentlemen!!!!!

True ,only place there to use quads is on lake. And the way the ice has been this year you shouldn't even see one there.

I was there Monday night. Ice thinner (8 inches?) but still safe, but I don't go much beyond the ledges. A little sketchy getting on, but the temps went below freezing last night. The usual 'success' - now have a running total of 18 fishing hours there with one flag (no fish). My bait is now swimming in the lake - done for the year.
My concern - some guy (before I got there, ~4 P.M.) went walking along the ice, beyond the large boulder-island on the left, and turned the corner. Another fisherman expressed his concern as the guy's vehicle was still there at 8, so we agreed the state police should be called. As I was leaving (~ 8:30), an associate pulled up, and I reiterated what was told to me. I suspect the poor guy went thru - hope I'm wrong.   Be safe.

That place haunts me ice fished it once saw a 9 plus pound walleye come out with the group I was with took the Atv back to the truck to retrieve something and the bike broke down so I would try it again in the summer but this time in my boat it was getting a little crazy so I decided to leave that's when all Hell broke loose saw a young man screaming turned looked and he went under only to loose his life   I'm done with that place be safe!!!!!
