Fuel or Electronic Hand Warmers?
« on: Feb 29, 2016, 08:33 AM »
Hi all,
What are the best hand warmers out there? I am looking specifically for opinions on the fuel (e.g. Zippo) versus the electronic versions, mostly because of price. My hands stay warm for about 50% of the day, but later in the afternoon or evening, they start to get cold - even with really good gloves on. Could be poor blood circulation.

I am trying to avoid the disposable packs, and also the heated gloves (mostly due to price).

I am leaning toward the electronic versions since they can be turned off, and also act as a backup charger for phones, etc. Amazon has tons of different versions.

Anyone have experience with either types? Any feedback on longevity, heating effectiveness, portability?

Thanks in advance.

I have Jon-e-warmers, zippo ones, the one use air activated Grabbers, electric ones, and my favorite that I keep going back to are these:

http://www.amazon.com/Camping-Solid-Fuel-Hand-Warmer/dp/B0011YLLCA/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1456771823&sr=1-4&keywords=hand+warmer+solid+fuel

Long lasting, slight smell but not as strong as the zippo style, and lots of heat. I use these all the time and they work very well. Last 5-6 hrs, and easy to pop in another stick and relight. The zippos can be refilled and relit, but are more of a hassle to do so in the ice shack.

i have zippos and jon e ones and chemical ones. i like the chemical ones best. easy to have on you and ready to use when your ready to get warm hands or to give away or to add to glomits that are meant to hold them.
i buy them by the case. nice to have them stashed all over too.

the white gas burners take time to light at home and can burn you if not in the bag right and can go out if they don't get enough air and stink and make your fingers stink and some say it transfers the stink to the lure/jigs and fish won't bite as well.
i pull some wading up under the wick and pour fluid on the wick before lighting it full of fuel. they burn hot, too hot. tried lighting one in a bucket once and went to grab it with insulated jersey gloves on and they melted to it.

i was looking into the battery hand warmers in several brands, but that's all the further i got.

I like the solid fuel sticks the best, been using them for years. The jon-e's  are nice but I don't like the smell. I bought about 100 sticks at a rummage sale last summer for a nickle, and have used them this year.
