Line for pike
« on: Dec 03, 2015, 01:55 PM »
Hey everyone

New to the forum. I am looking for a good line and test for pike. We get 30+ lbs on a lot of the lakes we fish. It will be for a few different reels not for tip ups.

How big of pike are you dealing with?

The rods I use for pike and walleye have 8 and 10 lb Power Pro ice on them.  I do have a heavier rod set up this year with 20lb Suffix 832 on a baitcaster, but I have't tried it out yet.

I've caught a monster pike on 20lb suffix 832, also super good for lakers. No stretch, hard to cut or break. I use suffix flurocarbon for my leader also, and haven't lost one I've hooked into with the set up yet (knock on wood).

I run 17lb seaguar abrazx for pike and it has served me well for pike over 40 inches.

I use 24# and 30# Tuf-Line Duracast (it is now named Supercast) line.
I catch many fish over 20#'s each season with it.
It is a coated super line that does not absorb water like normal super lines so it doesn't freeze up any more than mono would.

Are you spooling a rod or tipup? it does make a difference, at least to me. 30# + pike? A lot? I wanna fish by you! Most places 20# is a trophy benchmark.......

THATS WHAT I SAID !!!!

except for the 1st part, he did specify reel.. And to that I say, I dunno, Ive jigged relentlessly with no success for pike to the point that ive given up.. Now for the kicker, I jig for crappie and perch while pike fishing, and I pick up a Pike now and then... Go figure

Sorry, I missed the "reel" part. Packer football tonight, I'm afraid to watch......... @)

I run 30# FireLine on my jig rod. Mostly lipless cranks for me. I've got some large Jigging Raps, assorted spoons, jig n plastics etc. I like the FireLine because it doesn't hold water like braids. When I get ready to respool I'm gonna check Drifters choice.....

For pike, I use 12 lb test Fireline with a 10 lb test titanium leader on a Curado 200 or any other good baitcaster.  For hand lines, I use 30 to 40 lb test Mason Tiger braid with a 12 lb test titanium leader.

Have used 15# mono with South Bend Invisi-Leaders for that past fifteen years, and never looked back.

http://www.south-bend.com/products/terminal-tackle/leaders/invisa-leader-w-bb-swivel

They are light and fine enough that they hardly affect lure action, and the eight inch will hold the biggest pike in the lake.

I'm trying to catch my first northern pike and I would like to know about the size hook and leader i should be using.  I'm fishing tip ups and plan on using 20 LB line.   Any tips i would appreciate , Oh and i am in new england.  Thanks

A 12-18" steel leader (30lb from Wally will do) and a #6 lazer sharp treble should be a good place to start. Experiment from there and see what you like.
