That's my question too.   This is my first year ice fishing.  And now that the ice is out and my new iPhone was delivered (fell through a hole in Spirit Lake on Sunday morning).

Couldn't you go out in a boat and fish the crappies deep just like ice fishing until the water warms and turns over?  Isn't the warmer water what sends them out into the shallows to spawn?

Would love to hit Badger Creek or (Osceola) West Lake this weekend.

Possibly could fish them deep, but chances are that if there's  nice stable warm weather for a few days, they will be shallow and feeding.  Not enough open water here in sac county yet.

Sweet will be out on Saturday  Weather is supposed to be great all weekend.  I have not had my boat on either of those lakes, will be using the Down imager to mark structure for next year's ice!

What are they biting on?

Got out last night on a farm pond from 5pm till 6 pm.  caught 14 10+ crappies.  fished north side of pond with tube jigs on 1/32 ounce lead  18" below bobber.  White black and char worked good.
