Jigging Technique for Spoons
« on: Jan 07, 2016, 09:28 AM »
This may sounds stupid, but I'm mostly a tip-up guy, with no flasher, and I rarely use spoons on the ice.  My question is, how do you guys use your spoons?  Do you guys jig it at one specific depth once you mark fish?  Up and down the whole water column?  Tiny twitches or big jerky motions?  Tipped with anything?  Thanks in advance.

Depends on the situation. If trying to call fish in or the fish are more aggressive, I give it more action with bigger lifts or pound the bottom. I'll slow it down when a looker shows up while keeping it moving to maintain interest. I also always tip spoons with something, whether it's a minnow head or wigglers depending on the target species. Let the fish tell you what they're looking for and adjust accordingly.

Depends  how the fish are acting. I couldnt imagine fishing spoons without a flasher!

Yes to all the questions, and then more or so it depends...

Sometimes it's just a weight,  nothing more.  Other times it is a special gliding fluttering lure you wait to pendulum back or dragged on the bottom back.
