Woodstock as main line braid.

6-8lb test floro leader material.

Seaguar has been good to me so far.

I use tip up line as the main line on a tip up.  From there I have a swivel and a 3 to 4' leader of  6 lb mono or floro.  Easy to change out leader when it becomes frayed, nicked etc..

Look for kite line too. Also braided Dacron. But 1/2 the price because it don't say fishing on it

I think what's more important than the main line when fishing for trout is your leader. I use 3' of 6-8lbs of seaguar fouro.

be careful using braided fishing line on traps. Cold weather it will easily cut into your hands with a larger fish and will have limited grip.

Best trout set up I have had good luck with is: One of the puck style tip-ups with 36lb woodstock and a 3" wire leader with a 1/0 hook and a sml/med shiner  in a shallow cove. 2nd best is a Jaw Jacker  set up: 28" ugly stick with 20lb suffix neon lime ice braid with an 18" 10lb seaguar fluor leader with a 1/0 hook and a sm/med shiner.

I use braided dacron a small swivel and a long leader of 4 or 6 pound fluoro. Like others have said the leader seems to be what makes the difference with trout.

The dacron I use is heavy so I don't have an issue with it cutting into my hands, it does however hold a bit of water and it's not uncommon for me to have to pull out a length of line and re-wrap it on the first sets of the day, otherwise the spools can be a bit icy.

I like 6 (sometimes 4) pound fluoro coated mono for a trout leader.  Straight fluoro I find tough to deal with especially in cold weather.  Fluoro coated is best of both worlds, IMO.  I like to go 6' or so on a trout leader when in deep water.

That being said, last year at derby my cousin caught the biggest rainbow on a tipup he had just bought, no backing, just spun a bunch of used 10lb mono onto the spool and used like a 2/0 texas rig style bass hook.  He did everything wrong, yet, he caught the best fish of the weekend.  Not sure if the american flag on his tip up had anything to do with his luck or not??

That right there, is why fishing is awesome.
