Need advice - good portable to tow behind snowmobile
« on: Jan 16, 2006, 08:20 PM »
I would like to get a 3 to 4 man portable shelter that I can tow behind my sled and will withstand a 2 to 15 mile tow. How durable are these portables? I've been in a clam that had a full floor but we had to haul it on a dog sled. What are the pros and cons of the shelters that have sleds? It seems like you would have one foot on the snow and the other in the sled with the sidewall of the sled in the way. We do not usually have bare ice in my area, so I will be parked on snow. Thanks for any input.

I think that for extended towing you are going to want to have something on skis similar to those on the machine.  The plastic tubs will fair well on snow but ice and other hard surfaces will chew them up pretty quickly even with the hyfax runners on them.  I would fashion a sled that you can mount your shack on, preferably with replacable components similar to the wear rods on your skis.

I have the otter cabin that fishes 2 that tows awesome behind a snowmobile.  They make larger madels though, that would tow in a similar way.  I really like this setup.

Definitely take a look at the otters...we have a lodge...fits four when just keeping warm, fishes 2 comfortably.  The thing tows great behind a snowmobile, we dont even have skis, and it pulls fine even by hand.  If you do get an otter then definitely pick up one of there stretchy covers because the sled gets full of snow when riding down the trails!

I've been looking at the Otter's and the Eskimo's. The Eskimo Quick Flip II and III both have a bench seat which sounds good to me. Can anyone shed some light on the quality of the Eskimo's?

Thanks for all the replies.

very happy with my otter :)use it behind a quad and
it tows great . it has a good aproach angle so it doesn't plow snow
has a good runner system you can add on
is the beefiest sled I 've seen
has a nice hitch and attachment system
2 pins to switch between hitch and my rope
you can get swivel or bench seats [depending on size]
the shelter is heavy duty and opens and closes eaisly
drawback is the price when compared to others
got lucky and saved 30% at a Gander Mtn sale last march
maybe they do this every year in march if you can wait???
read some threads that thay have bad coustumer service but
you shouldn't need it as it is A1 quality
