bait traps questions
« on: Dec 22, 2015, 05:21 PM »
just watched videos about trapping minnows. does one brand of trap work better than another (using same design)?  does the silver trap work better than the black ones and if so, why do you think this is?

I think trap placement is the key.  I have used both the silver and the black.. thinking the silver might have an edge over the black, But no data to support that.. and I have caught plenty in the black traps....  location is more important

No clue.. Maybe the silver shine attracts them?     ???

Just like in real estate it's LOCATION, LOCTION , LOCATION!!!

The lower catch rate may be related to chemical residue from the paint.

So...what is a good location?

I've tried these traps in the past and never did very well.

Evenin Friends....  Way back in the early sixties...I was taught most everythin I know about ice fishin from two  uncles! On shiner trappin was told, that traps "must be a bright silver, not chromed though! They explained it simply as bein "visually" easier for the shiners to see the bait and other shiners inside! It's dark under the ice so if you put yourself in their position, a black trap against a dark background is tough to see and get into! But a bright trap shows up and allows more attraction because it stands out AND because they can see the other shiners better inside through the wire. My uncles would also "pre-load" the trap with 3 or 4 live shiners to keep bait active and "call" the others in. We knew that it was their eyes that kept them from gettin back out so it made sense, and worked nicely 55 yrs ago as it still does today! Use every dis-advantage to your advantage they'd say! Just my $.02  O.P.

Maybe but I don't think so. I had 2 store bought black ones and had the same problem...  :-\

Little tip try some gulp alive maggots or power bait with your bread or dog food the juices in these products do wonders for atracking bait into your trap .

Try glass minnow traps, they're a bit pricey but they'll out fish the wire traps 5 to 1. I have trapped river shiners for over 40yrs. and have tried everything but the glass traps out shine anything on the market.

I have tried numerous locations with no success at all with my (originally) galvanized trap. By now it's browinsh from silt from the main river near me. I've tried various creeks that run thru marshy areas and a fairly shallow and marshy pond. Right now it's sitting in a golf course pond. I'm surprised that those would have any minnows but I'm told they do.

I guess I should clean off the silt to see if that has any effect.

I believed they like things they blend in with. I used to roll up tin foil to the size of a shiner, and sometimes put a Sprite can in there with the usual bread. Had the Gee galvanized forever, and they always did the job. Picked up some black ones and they didn't do so well. I also took the black 12" extension and put galvanized ends on it, that didn't do too well either.

Try glass minnow traps, they're a bit pricey but they'll out fish the wire traps 5 to 1. I have trapped river shiners for over 40yrs. and have tried everything but the glass traps out shine anything on the market.
Now that you mentioned it, I got to give it a try. I wonder if a 5 gallon water dispenser bottle would work. It's not as clear as glass, but close.

Location food and fish habhit. Silver traps do tend to work better. Bigger traps work better.  It's fun pulling a trap out and thinking it's going to break under the weight of fish.

And some times you don't get any

Depends.. Just like on my trap line, I set on sign.  I'll scout the area looking for "hot spots"..   If I know the location is 'loaded" I'll check back in a few hours.   Other areas I'll let them sit over night and depending on success I'll move to a different location or reset.
