AO stove
« on: Nov 04, 2015, 03:52 PM »
I'm looking for propane stoves for my arctic oven. I see what Alaska tent and tarp sells but was curious if anybody has info on other stoves they feel are better for weekends in the winter. So tell me your experiences with the stoves you've tried. Thanks

I use a Big Buddy heater in my ice tent and it keeps me pretty warm even in -20.  I have it hooked to a 20 lb propane tank and it will last me a couple weekends before I have to refill.  I do have plenty of ventilation in my tent so co2 isn't much of a worry for me.

Thanks IFF, that's an option I consider. Just wonder if it'd be enough heat to keep my 6 year old comfy. She's had 2 trips now that weren't overly fun for her due to getting cold so trying to figure out something overkill and back the heat off if need be.

We used a small folding type stove on a winter ice fishing trip once that was very good.
Kept us toasty in a Cabelas Alagnak tent.

I have had my children (my youngest is 5) out in -20 in my eskimo quick fish 6 tent with the big buddy.  The big buddy keeps the temperature comfortable. when it gets colder than that then I will pair my big buddy heater up with a little buddy and the cold doesn't seem to be an issue.  I haven't had the kids complain about being cold yet.  They actually didn't want to leave the ice tent so we could tear down and go home because it was too cold outside.

I would second the big buddy heater- and with kids nice to have a flame out when tipped over and a CO2 shutoff. I have used mine in Delta Junction when it was so cold the sled wouldn't start  and was never cold.

I have a NUWAY stove. I can't remember which model, but it's the double burner model. I like the fact that you can regulate it with a turn of the knob.  I have to admit though, a regular homemade barrel stove that I have is my favorite.  Load it up and it'll burn you out at -30 in the AO. once it has a good bed of coals you can shut it down and it will burn for 6 hours. On the downside it is very heavy; Hence the NUWAY stove..
