Hooks????
« on: Nov 12, 2015, 10:51 AM »
I'm looking to see what everyone uses for pike hooks.. My brother and I are going up to lake Champlain to catch some pike but we fish for bass most of the time or whatever fells like hitting. What hook would be good for northern pike and bass so I don't need to change my setup every time? Thanks

A lot of people like circle hooks but I have lost more fish with them than any other ice fishing. I love them for surf casting or cat fishing where you have current but not for ice fishing. I have gone to live bait hooks or shiner hooks because that is exactly what they are made for and hook up rate is much better. I also use trebles a lot for pike.

If you can find finesse/drop shot hooks big enough, they work great for me.

A Quick Strike Rig, with a sliding hook will cover a very wide range of baits and work VERY well. I miss very few fish and most all my fish are hooked in the lips. When I feel the fish, I set the hook! Just check to see that they are legal were you are fishing...

Small treble hooks work best easy to turn around to remove. Some use two one in snout one in tail of shiners. Called bait hangers legal in Ma if intent is to catch one fish. Counts as
One trap not two hooks

Heer is the type of hook that I use, I like them better than trebles. The hook is called a "Double Ryder" If I can't find them, I make them.

I rig them like this;

I use Quick Strike rigs mostly. If I run a single hook its usually a 2 with a perch, large pond shiner or sucker hooked up through the bottom of the mouth out the top near an eye socket.

I like to avoid treble hooks, for the well being of the fish. I do very well with octopus hooks, different sizes depending on the size bait you are using
