Hi-vis mono line for tightlining
« on: Apr 24, 2015, 05:36 PM »
I'm in the process of taking stock of all my ice fishing equipment for next year. I got rid of most of my old 2lb stren ice hi vis gold line and am looking to replace it with a good 2-3 lb. hi vis mono line for tightlining. I already have some sufix ice magic tangerine 3 lb. and vicious ice yellow 2 lb. pony spools on hand, but besides those, am still searching for a good tightlining hi vis mono line. Any suggestions?

Legend: Tightlining is basically line watching for bites. I like watching my line under water, and know I have a bite when my line does anything different (goes straight, twitches, moves to side, goes slack, etc.) than the action I'm imparting it by jigging. It helps greatly to tightline with a hi vis monofilament line because of its buoyant qualities and because you can better see it below water. Mike Boedeker, a master tightliner and 2012 world champion, explains the art of tightlining in the following video:

I tight line about 90 percent of the time and used 4 lb lime green Sufix with a clear 3 lb Sufix  leader with great results. I'd stretch my line but let a slight coil in the water of high visable green line, slight twitch or bigger coil ment a hit. I used the 3 lb test tangerine orange line with a spring bobber, it turns invisible in the water, not good for tightening.
